TUTORIAL: How To Make Lite Versions of KONTAKT Libraries – rollerball screenshot
AudioZ | AudioSex | 27 December 2021 | PDF | 1.7MB
After so many requests and such a long wait, it's finally here! This is a detailed tutorial on how to make Lite Versions of KONTAKT libraries. I initially planned to make a forum post, but I realised that the length would be too long for a forum post. So I decided to make a PDF instead.

In this tutorial, I've taken the conversion of one of my previous libraries, Cinematic Studio Strings rLV as an example. The tutorial goes through all the steps of the conversion process in detail. Screenshots have been added wherever appropriate to make the understanding clearer. The steps have been given based on the procedure I use and justifications have been given as well. Wherever possible, a few alternate methods have been discussed.

The links to the various tools and utilities used during the conversion process would be found in the download link container below. Along with them, a few forum threads have been linked as well which have some important discussion related to the utility. The reader is encouraged to go through these threads.

Hopefully after completing this tutorial you'll be able to go ahead and make your own Lite Versions of various libraries! Even though this tutorial is intended for those completely new to this subject, I hope that experienced LV makers might some find some use for it as well, in the form of alternate methods to do things.

I'd like to thank everyone who has been waiting so patiently for this tutorial, and apologise for taking so long to complete it. I hope everything was clear and easy to follow. Feel free to contact me via PMs in case you have any doubts and I'll be happy to help!

Wishing you all a Merry Christmas and happy holidays ahead!

NOTE
While I was writing this post, I noticed that the developer for one of the utilities, conNCW, has recently released an update to the utility after almost two years. So the commands used in this tutorial might not be the most up to date. At the time the post first appears, the tutorial will contain the steps corresponding to the older version (04). The link for this version is included in the container and all the steps described in the tutorial work with this version of the utility.

But I'll try to update the tutorial at a later date so that it works with the latest version. So if you're reading this at a future date, check the primary link container for the most up-to-date versions of the files.

I made a detailed post on the sister site which you can read HERE.
But in short: I generally include the Stage/Tree mic position in addition to the Close mic because to my ears, it is crucial to get the sound of the space the library was recorded in and can't be substituted easily by a reverb. It is easy to substitute the Hall/Ambient mic with a reverb, and I find that the Mix mic is not all that useful in most cases.

Is there a way to extract files from player libraries to use them in legit full Kontakt?
  Resident 27.05.2020 29 445
+2620
No. You need k'd Kontakt to use Kontakt Player libraries.

No time and no brain for such extravagances. But will in any case read through this interesting tutorial. Big thanks for the share of knowledge and Happy New Year.

I can't identify which sample is using which mic none of them shows mic names

As I noted in the guide, for some libraries it's not clear at all. But there's definitely a naming scheme, because without it even the developers won't be able to map the samples correctly.

Not all libraries are as clear as the one which I chose as an example. For example, in Spitfire Symphonic Strings, the sample names contain a "c", "t", and "a" for Close, Tree, and Ambient mics respectively. I've even encountered libraries where they're just labelled "1", "2", and so on. So keep looking for it and make use of the Edit Mode in KONTAKT.
What library are you trying to convert BTW?

Thank you so much Rollerball, I hope to get some free time to study that technique to minimize Kontakt libraries

I find it is much easier and faster to delete the samples in offending groups i dont want from within the group editor than it is to be messing around with missing samples like this tut states, then you dont have to worry about what version of kontakt the lib was saved with :)

Also, i would say dont go reducing the bitdepth of these samples! I dont know what kind of dither you are applying, and your gonna fuk them up, kontakt is all about layers and layers of samples.. orchestral libs will suffer 100% man
If a lib has been saved at some ridiculous samplerate, yes cut that fucker down to 48k that is totally fine in my book
if you use a nice SR converter.
peace

You can do that too, but I still suggest using an appropriate version of KONTAKT for compatibility's sake. Also, you'll essentially be doing way more of work, going through each NKI and removing samples one group at a time. It's way more effort than to just batch resaving for KONTAKT v6.1.1 and below libraries, and even going through each NKI and clicking on "Remove samples with missing zones" for v6.1.1+ libraries.

I see where you're coming from, but 50% is a huge amount of reduction you miss out on if you don't drop the bit-depth. As stated in the tutorial, I use iZotope MBIT+ dither and haven't ever had any problems with reducing bit-depth even in dense layering. But it's upto one's preferences and they can definitely choose not to reduce the bit-depth.

Definitely! However be prepared to edit all the loop points in the library if you do so.

Chrome is flagging up the rar file as 'maybe dangerous'.

Which RAR file is it flagging? I've seen Chrome do that before for links from this website.

I don't know if you have the problem of not being able to import RX if there are too many files.

Yes I have had that happen to me. To avoid that, I divide the samples into smaller, more manageable chunks. For the example taken in the guide, I divided the samples based on which sections they belonged to, i.e. Basses, Cellos, Violas, Violins 1, and Violins 2.

Many thanks @rollerball for this tutorial.
Very understandable, I was able to minify a few librairies.
For the latest, I used Kontakt though to decompress / recompress nks files as sometimes conNCW.exe crashed on some samples Kontakt has processed without any issues.

It's also more convenient as it allows to skip nkx extraction step and extract waves directly (despites all samples are extracted to same directory).
I also wonder if Kontakt compression could be more efficient but it's probably just in my head.

Glad to know it was easy to understand!
Yes, you can absolutely use KONTAKT for extracting the samples if you feel it works better for you. But in my experience, it takes way more time to extract larger libraries when using KONTAKT, and it's more prone to crashing. And if it does crash, you have to start from the beginning.

Rollerball, have you ever converted samples only to find they've turned into harsh noise? I've encountered it a couple of times, normally with pad samples, but I've also run into it with orchestral samples in one of the old Spitfire Albion libraries. Just wondering if you knew what caused that and how to solve it?

Hey man, missed your comment. Sorry for the late reply!

I've NEVER had anything as such happen to me in any of my conversions. Could you try and see in which step this issue occurs?
  Resident 8.01.2022 17 90

I did, and it was due to conNCW CLI converter during n2w to wav conversion.
It's rare but I faced it two times, one I can remember was with some samples during Ethnic Winds library conversion.
The solution I used was to extract faulty samples directly with Kontakt, sound was OK in this case.

Thank you for the tutorial.

Have you, or any other, encountered a problem with total commander when .nkx- files have files that have " or * in their filename? Total commander unpacks those files replacing " with [quote] and * with [star].

I haven't found any solution for this. I can rename the files but they will be changed back when repacked to nkx.

Projectsam swing! and Funk Soul Productions Vintage Rhythm Section are libraries that have this problem.
