Page 7 & 9 ...

"The most obvious point is piracy. In a rush to get everything to go digital, to recreate every classic instrument in software and every other recording effect, device and controller as a bunch of pixels within your DAW, people seemed to forget that anything you create digitally can be copied. Which is obviously what happened (and not just within our industry), so many companies have shied away from software-only solutions and have, at the very least, started tying their software to hardware dongles. We’ve even had one software developer contact us saying that they’re going to give their software-only app one more go, and if it’s pirated then they’ll turn away from software forever. The end of the computer only studio solution could be just around the corner – piracy has put paid to that rather elegant dream (which turned out to be a clunky nightmare anyway). "

The biggest misconception developers have is that every pirated use of their software is a lost sale. I actually used to work in the anti-counterfeit industry and know from personal experience that this simply isn't the truth.

I use pirate software - obviously - however, mainly use this as a way to have access to an unlimited trial period, of sorts. When a piece of software proves itself valuable over a given length of time, I buy it. For every VST, for example, I download, I will discard and delete all VSTs that I don't use regularly.

I'm not naive enough to think that's what everyone does, but I do think, especially on this forum, there is a large number of people sharing my philosophy in this regard.

There are, of course, greedy bast@rds that just collect for collecting's sake :)

Oh and many thanks for the upload - I must admit I won't be buying the legit version of the magazine ;)

You seem to have missed the point of my post. That is that pirate downloads do not always equal lost sales.

sTeGkAy I share the same philosophy.... If I like the plug-in or software I will buy it. SOmetimes it does take more than 15-or 30 days to evaluate a piece of software to make sure that it really works for me....I too delete what I don't use or buy (except the waves plugs they are just too damn expensive IMO)...

Copyright was originally developed to stop cheats passing off other peoples work as their own. The copyright laws were then hijacked by corporate interests to protect their investments in mass production. By the very economic laws of supply and demand, if a product can be infinitely reproduced, by the million, at the click of a mouse then it is next to valueless. Try telling me, in real terms, that a retail copy of the latest Adobe photoshop is worth the same as a handmade, solid oak, dining table !!!
All who wander are not lost
