During fifty years of publishing the “Bible of Rock and Roll,” Jann Wenner recorded a series of interviews that are now regarded among the most important historical documents of rock. From the hubris and pissed-off attitude of Pete Townshend, to the volcano that was John Lennon after the breakup of the Beatles, to Bono, using music to speak to God, these interviews reveal the beating hearts of six creative giants.

Including a never-before-heard interview with Bruce Springsteen, The Masters intimately profiles the extraordinary musicians who dominated rock and roll, from London and California to New York and L.A.. This is a fly-on-the wall listening experience, cultural masterpiece, and must-have recording, bringing you closer to the artists who changed history.

Being a musician, this book seemed odd to me upon release, with the slew of artists seemingly omitted, but Jann Wenner simultaneously cleared things up while stepping into some ish with his racist/sexist comments surrounding the very selective choosing of who he interviewed. The backlash isn't for once some Modern, 2023 over-reaction either, but a legit caught-with-his-pants-down moment, and should be less surprising than some make it out to be, in my less-than-humble opinion. The lack of surprise comes from Rolling Stone's notorious habit of denying Black and female artists the cover ever since its inception, maybe most notably Prince and Michael Jackson, who weren't shy when commenting on Rolling Stone's treatment of them.
A fair breakdown of the scenario, for those interested:
