I will respect "Heinrich Schenker" till the end of time, for his tremendous contribution in music and music analysis, but, maybe he hadn't more time to think and analyse the magnific development of the 20th century "classical music".

He discussed many times with "Arnold Schoenberg", both were critics on different magazines, in one of these famous discussions "Schenker" said that certain note on "Brahms" piano sonata was nothing, "Schoenberg" wrote an answer on the his rival magazine and said: What, no way, that note has an importance in this "Brahms sonata", since it tooks 16 measures, but 16 measures in music can damage an ear or the spirit of someone else, "Brahms" really thought about that terrible dissonance, any pianist or listener got irritated when that note appeared for the first time, then during the other measures, "Brahms" made many changes to that same note be addapted to the ears, in measure 15 it revelled to be a simple "appogiatura" that resolves naturally on the chord I. Schenker never had another discussion with Schoenberg.

But, so schoenberg died, he made many criticisms of his person and his works, a pure detonation, could say covardice from "Schenker".

Summary of works: "Schenker" thinks that Mozart is perfect, it begins the ascending melody line and ends descending the melody, for "Schencker" that is a 'LAW' that must be respect to do good music. If you are a Pop musician, will perceive that all pop music follow this rule, if you try another thing, your music wll not happen.

So, that's "Schenker", his mind was in the 18th and on some composers of the 19th. But, I forgive him.
