Donald Passman, "All You Need To Know About Music Busines, 10th Edition"

All You Need to Know About the Music Business by veteran music lawyer Don Passman—dubbed “the industry bible” by the Los Angeles Times—is now updated to address the biggest transformation of the music industry yet: streaming.

For more than twenty-five years, All You Need to Know About the Music Business has been universally regarded as the definitive guide to the music industry. Now in its tenth edition, Donald Passman leads novices and experts alike through what has been the most profound change in the music business since the days of wax cylinders and piano rolls. For the first time in history, music is no longer monetized by selling something—it’s monetized by how many times listeners stream a song. And that completely changes the ecosystem of the business, as Passman explains in detail.

Since the advent of file-sharing technology in the late 1990s to the creation of the iPod, the music industry has been teetering on the brink of a major transformation—and with the newest switch to streaming music, this change has finally come to pass. Passman’s comprehensive guide offers timely, authoritative information from how to select and hire a winning team of advisors and structure their commissions and fees; navigate the ins and outs of record deals, songwriting, publishing, and copyrights; maximize concert, touring, and merchandising deals; and how the game is played in a streaming world.

“If you want to be in music, you have to read this book,” says Adam Levine, lead singer and guitarist of Maroon 5. With its proven track record, this updated edition of All You Need to Know About the Music Business is more essential than ever for musicians, songwriters, lawyers, agents, promoters, publishers, executives, and managers—anyone trying to navigate the rapid transformation of the industry.

The book is basically focused on big record labels, it is not very useful if you are not going to sign with one.

In my opinion this book is completely outdated, If this survives, it is because of its fame earned more than a decade ago, however the panorama of the music industry does not stop changing and this book does not cover the entire current panorama and much less from a practical point of view for today's musicians, and it's pretty boring.
The book is basically focused on big record labels, it is not very useful if you are not going to sign with one.
I recommend this other book, which is focused on today's music industry and gives better advice for today's musicians.

The book you recommend is about Stream popularirty and lot of gigging and desperate selling of merchandise, to the point of falling off with mental health issues that so many artist are suffering today. Passman methods puts money in your pocket with cash deals rather than poor streams deals that cannot pay for pet food. Many artists are doing illegal or undesirable promotional activities to support a music career. This did not happen in the 80s and early 90s. Passman in 2017 still managed £100 million record dea;. That makes him relevant.

The book I recommend is realistic, streaming as the book says can be a huge revenue deal, and even the greatest had to tour gigs sometimes in their carrer, eventually if you are good and commercial you will be discovered by a big recod label, however this book does not tell you what the Herstand book tells, and that is that currently the major record labels do not sign anyone who have not carved out for itself a promising path, the book I recommend tells you how to start that path from scratch, this book instead tells you to hire third parties to find a contract with major record labels. The book I recommend see the record labels as an option for a musician, and also tells you about the pros and cons of a deal with a recod label, this book sees the record label as panacea, but the record label option is not for everyone, this book have been written by a lawyer, the book I recommend by a musician and at leat to me, I felt it more honest.

As a matter of fact things have changed their names, instead of printing cds and covers and then transporting by mail or trucks, now are copied with a single click at a cost of half a cent.

Years ago I read some books that made a big difference in my life:
"Musician's Legal Companion"
in which the subject was: "Don't sign a recording contract before reading this book!"

and other books that show the dirty secrets of the record label world:
"Bordowitz-Dirty Little Secrets Of The Record Business" and
"Avalon-Confessions Of A Record Producer"
