MixWithTheMasters Chris Gehringer Mastering (Isn't it) Obvious, My Way, Cinderella, 15 Forever, Saturate Tutorial screenshot
Tutorial | MAY 2025 | 1.8 GB
Sharpen up your mastering skills with Chris Gehringer, the multi-platinum engineer from Sterling Sound. In this series, Chris joins us for an up-to-date breakdown of his 2025 workflow, analyzing his work on five exceptional tracks by Alessia Cara, Charlotte Day Wilson, Remi Wolf and more.

Reference mixes play a crucial role in modern mastering, and Chris breaks down how he uses them to refine his sound and stay ahead of emerging trends. He shares his methodical approach to dynamic range compression, including practical tips for dialing in limiter settings that suit any track. His insights into tonal balance control reveal how to make tasteful enhancements while preserving the integrity of the mix engineer’s original vision.

Chris wraps up the series with a set of dos and don’ts for mastering engineers. This covers a range of contentious subjects, from work-life balance and gear acquisition, to metering and loudness penalties. His insights double as both a practical guide and a thoughtful reflection on what it means to thrive in the modern mastering landscape.

Right on! Anyone know what program he masters in?

sequoia... nothing special in it, just old software soon to be out of development.

idk why Mastering Engineers uses complex and old software and you're using FabFilter and / or iZotope. You can do the exact same using even FL Studio.

So the guy gets paid 5 figures just to do 0.something db bells in pro-q3 and yanking ozone 11 maximizer... Tell me again how is not about being well connected in the industry and showing with a whole lot of outboard stuff for scene that never gets used.

Is not the gear, is not the software, even is now what he's doing. It's atll about the songs he gets involved. I'm sure it is the favorite of Josh Gudwin and many other engineers for doing next to nothing and/or praising the work of the mixers as perfect.

I watched it, some pretty good insights, and I appreciated his perspective. Small moves for sure, but yes they were all very effective. Interesting to me looking deeper into his choices than what he described, I do feel he held back a bit explaining the extreme specifics.

Couldn't tell if he was purposefully hiding the algo on the Pro-Q in each, but it never showed. I kind of think he was. Think he was using Linear Phase or?

It's very easy, test natural phase vs linear phase, it's situational, the correct one sounds fuller, not because it does something magic, but because the wrong one creates cancellations or isn't addictive, meaning if you do stuff in natural phase and the rotation of the phase creates cancellations, it will sound duller and with less low end. Viceversa, if the natural phase is good, especially in boosting frequencies, it's addictive to the sound and there's no cancellations, so the natural phase might sound better than linear phase. Recently I noticed that tonebooster eq pro is quite good in handling transients, unfortunately it's also more invisible and we want at times for the eq to grab more of the sustain part of the sound (analog eqs for example do that well but they fuck up and smear the transients more easily), as well it doesn't provide linear eq, so I can't quite a/b, but if let's say I consider natural phase to be better than linear for a given situation in pro-q and I have time to spare, I duplicate it on tb and do a/b to see if it's even better or not really (again, situational).

He uses what he uses because he's used it for twenty years solid and knows it inside out, and his customers pay him five figures because he's done it every time, over and again, for twenty years.

People aren't buying your gear choices in mastering, they're buying sales. How do you download judgement?
