Make Believe Studios MixHead v4.0.3-R2R screenshot
Team R2R | 2024.06.04 | 21 MB
For years and years I’ve been staring at photos of classic and modern sessions, always trying to learn what I can about my favorite producers, mixers, and engineers. I’ve probably spent hundreds of hours staring at photos, studying the racks and searching for unique pieces of gear. I eventually stumbled across a quote from Michael Brauer, about about a certain someone being 100% "in the box" except for a single piece of hardware, which led me to the discovery that I am proud to present to you. The MixHead.

Make Believe Studios MixHead captures the lightning in a bottle that this unique box offered. Knowing what we do now, and with myriad tape plugins at our disposal, some of the design approaches taken with the original unit may seem backwards or counter-intuitive today, but they are approaches that still work, and are quite fun to experiment with. We even added a few requested features like tenth of a decibel HF Adjust and a new 3.75ips lo-fi mode.

In practice, you may find that the 30ips setting sounds like it has more distortion than the 15ips setting. That’s fine. You may hear some interesting phase interplay at in the higher frequencies that you wouldn’t normally associate with tape. That’s also fine. You will also find that the input and drive controls are highly interactive, and that the HF Adjust is great for adjusting the top end in a way that sounds natural.

MixHead wasn’t created to do what your other tape plugins do. It resurrects and modernizes an outboard hardware DSP box previously relegated to the dreaded digital graveyard.

MixHead is an essential plugin that can be used in any stage of the recording process, with an efficiency in the code that allows multiple instances without worrying about overtaxing your CPU.
It was created to sound good, and now, it sounds fantastic.

Fuck, I'm glad R2R is back, too.... but what's with the goddamn comment section? I thought there were 50+ comments here about what a masterpiece this plugin is, or the scam of the century. Bullshit

After testing it in my mix bus, I recommend pushing the complement with an optimal level at the input, it makes a good combination with the TGP afterwards.

Ok, tested this and god particle right after this and.... good mixbus plugin FOR A MODERN SOUND... Important note... because we have many many MANY "finisher" tools like the recent marc daniel.... the P44.... the VintageWarmer... and a long list... but each is better in certain style.. just check who uses / who is the people behind that device.

For a MODERN record / POP record, where the king Serban uses this, WORKS. Combine with the plugin of another MODERN mixer like Joshua's god particle and you are IN THE WAY for a quick record finisher chain. I'm not naming it like a "definitive" mastering chain because each song is different... I need to test this bad boy more and more but as starter a good combination would be... Mixhead+GodParticle+TheGlue (if needed) then probably corrections if needed and finish with your favorite combination of clippers & limiters... my final stage is StandardClip (if needed) + smart:limit + L2 (if needed)

well... 3 months using this and disappointed when you're not using on pop music.. sounds sooo predictable / cheap. Also for my total disappointment saw the YouTube guy who probes this nulls test with a FREE saturator plugin.. Now putting agaisnt Magnum P44 and P44 has another sound!! Probably get rid of this and / or complement my mastering chain with MIchelangelo instead of a saturator before. You know, eveey single scenario depends, but for me, a really fan of get rid of somethinhg I don't see using on everything, this def is a one-trick-pony.

You need the Serban sound bc your client send you Serban work as reference? Go for it. But if you're into multiple sessions with multiple styles / sounds / targets... try something else.
