Black Rooster Audio has announced the release of The Canary, a free effect plug-in that adds attack and sustain to drum shells.

The goal was to create a Plugin, that gives you control over some basic parameters of the drum signal, that you may have lost during the recording process (or they probably haven‘t been there anyway), such as a tone, attack, sustain and some very basic filtering, which defines what is the natural sound of the shell.

As musicians and experienced sound enthusiasts we understand the recording process, where it is often a question of the right equipment, time and money to achieve quality. Especially when it comes to the drums. And who doesn‘t know the drummer that has some good (or bad) gear, perfectly damped to sound nice on stage or in his or her practicing garage, sounding like hitting a card-box. Whenever it comes to recording you might loose up to 80% of your tone defining sustain and the attack has been cut down to.

The Canary is here to help you, synthetically adding those missing parameters after the damage is done, allowing you to „tune“ your drums in a song-conducive manner, which means that you can easily adjust it to the songs basic key.

And as long as your single drum instruments are on separate tracks, you can add the Canary effect on each single shell, making your Bass Drum sound voluminous and punchy, your Toms sound full and precise and your Snare sound crispy and massy.

The Canary features

  • Add the right tone to your drums.
  • Make them sound crisp and full.
  • Get that extra “punch”.
  • Suitable for all shells in your set.

    Thank you a lot Sunny!

It probably comes with some drum kits since the archive is 84MB [win]. I might consider registering for future downloads if it's worth it.

    Asking for a challenge code.

Yeah, it asks for a serial number. What's the point in posting freeware here if I have to request a code from the dev?

I was thinking the same. The Plugin is freeware anyway. You only have to register an account at the Dev's Site.

Yes, it asks for a serial number. Also, the plugin is 42MB... hmmm I wouldn't call that an optimal size for a plugin.

It contains an AU, a VST Plugin and Documentation.

I don't care much about the file size. But what I do care about is the activation. Didn't want to do online activation and offline activation didn't let me copy nor store the Request Code/Machine ID which was pretty embarassing. I just don't have the patience to manually type in all these digets. If you want make something free, then just make it free and hassle free at that.

In this regard this is a big fail already and I know I won't buy anything from him in the future.

I downloaded this from the dev's site and contrary to what others have said, I find it quite useful in certain situations. It has kind of a funky filter that has been pretty useful with some old tracks I have. I'm not saying this is absolutely game changing, but I'm very happy I downloaded it a while back.

On the Bitter-Sweet note, I was never really of fan of it, but it also has its uses. I'm forever grateful to be able to have/try/use many different variations of plugins and to be able to find the one that fits the specific application the best. Not everything plugin shines on everything.

90% of install size make up the gui elements, looks like shit - instead of placing required bundles in app support he goes for the app folder that might get easily wiped or moved once you forget the bundles purpose - remove the crap gui, place dependencies in app support, make a free plug free (wont bother regging at black cock audio) then ppl might consider testing your sh**.
