Yes, completely free. For me, the ideal would be to use these samples in my DAWs, or a software (like the MD chipsynth or the RYM2612), or even in an SF2 bank, because having to learn (to write music - and/or transcribe, from your head or MIDI device to) an Instrument that is, in fact, just an arpeggiator and an amplitude envelope that you control through lines of code, definitely does not appeal to me. But again, the samples are wonderful and the quality of the material present is absolutely unique!
Para-para-parAUDIOZ/SEX! Whoa-oh-oh oh-oooh oh-oh-oh...

Yeah, you need to keep in mind, for a lot of us something like this was the first audio software we used. At least in Europe there was an amiga in like every second childsroom. And cracktros showed us what that thing could do when used by talented people. So this comes quite natural to us, we didn't know how to use cubase or logic when we moved over to our 68k macs.

Your basic/goto DAW synth can do these sounds close enough. I prefer the comfort of my DAW instead of going full authentic with tracker style sequencer. The trick is in retro/chippy sound design, learn that and you will sound 8bit in no time, it's not crucial to use actual 8bit sound rate.
