Vocal Compressor is a simple compressor plugin optimized for speech and singing voice.

It is heavily inspired by how mastering limiters work and features the same kind of lookahead (about 1ms) and program dependency but in a soft knee compression context. Additionally, the "HF Sens" sidechain filter allows you to fine-tune the sensitivity to high frequencies. It is similar to what you can find on the back of a famous optical compressor.

This has become one of my most used comps for vocals. I never used to use the Waves Rvox much (I couldn't be bothered to install the Waves bundle), but I get now why people like it so much for vocals. Super fast to work with and don't use much CPU, which is nice when you're working on projects with 10+ vocal tracks. Works great together with other comps too!

It's inspired by LA2, they say. The "HF" button made me wonder as it's a well known LA2 mod and a really useful one. That, very quick attack (less than a ms) and the proper program dependant release curve should make it shine no matter what it's based on. That said, I would love to see some gain there, not just trim. Like +12dB at least. It's a tiny niggle.

Yes, but it's more of an almost direct copy of Waves Rvox (which is also based on an LA2A but very simplified). Compare them both in PluginDoctor and you'll see what I mean Even the UI in Vocal Compressor is a direct copy. The only difference is that instead of the gate in Rvox he decided to include the HF sensitivity control that most LA2As have, which was a very good idea IMO!

Should also be noted that the "Vocal" mode in Pro-C 2 also has the exact same transfer function as Rvox and Vocal Compressor, but the release in Pro-C 2 Vocal mode is a bit faster than the other two IIRC. Rvox and Vocal Compressor has both identical release envelopes and transfer function though.

It's easy to overlook plugins when they're offered for free, especially with so many top-notch goodies to be had on this site, but this little comp is really good.
Hassle-free and especially cool for spoken word in my opinion.
Slap it on, quick tweak and you're good.
