OB-Xd is a classic synthesizer with a timeless sound that continues to captivate musicians and producers alike.

With its rich, full-bodied tones and expansive sound design capabilities, the OB-Xd is the perfect choice for those looking to add a vintage touch to their music. Whether you're producing electronic tracks, recording live instruments, or composing for film and television, the OB-X is an invaluable tool that will bring a unique and expressive quality to your sound. So why wait? Add an OB-Xd to your studio today and take your music to the next level!

The OB-Xd is a synthesizer that has been designed to recreate the sound and behavior of the Oberheim OB-X.

However, the original design of the OB-X was limited in some ways, so the OB-Xd includes a number of additional or altered features. One key feature of the OB-Xd is its implementation of micro random detuning, which helps to create a fuller, richer sound. Overall, the OB-Xd has been designed to produce a sound that is as good and as rich as the original OB-X.

Overview

While not copying originals, some of the features were taken to a better point. Continuous blendable multimode filter (HP-Notch(BP)-HP in 12 dB mode and 4-1 pole in 24 dB mode). Also, like many synths of the OB-X's generation, the OB-Xd has no internal effects so its sounds and textures can be greatly enhanced by the use of additional processing like chorus, reverb, delay, etc.

Additionally, for those interested in micro-tuning, the OB-Xd comes equipped with support for MTS-ESP. This allows for more granular control over your tuning adjustments, perfect for the discerning synth musician.

Free version includes fully functional Standalone app, Audio Unit and VST plug-ins. Registered version delivers both 2.x and 3.x commercial rights1, AAX, VST3, and LV2 plug-ins and technical support to help you get the most out of the software.

What's New in OB-Xd 3

Enhanced Oscillator Features: The update introduces new Pulse Width Modulation Controls for intricate sound shaping, enhancing the sonic possibilities of the oscillators.

PW Offset: Adjusts the pulse width of Oscillator 2 with a unipolar knob based on the PW knob's setting.
PW Env: Modulates Oscillator 2's pulse width with the Filter Envelope.
PW Env Both: 1+2 button allows the Filter Envelope modulation to affect both oscillators' pulse width.

Advanced Filter Capabilities: Including Self-Oscillation, Filter Falloff Adjustment, and Adjustable Filter Envelope Shape, providing more control and variety in sound filtering.

Self-Oscillation: The 12dB filter now self-oscillates at high resonance levels.
Filter Falloff Adjustment: A new FLT CMP knob in the Voices section influences cutoff scaling.
Adjustable Filter Envelope Shape: Blends between exponential and linear shapes for the attack.
Filter Envelope Inversion: A new button for inverting the Filter Envelope output.
Enhanced Filter Keytracking Control: A refined knob offers precise control over the filter's response to keyboard tracking.
Level Difference Knob: Ensures consistent audio output during filter adjustments.

Refined Attack Envelope Shape: This feature introduces a sophisticated logarithmic-linear attack slider, offering unparalleled flexibility for dynamic sound sculpting. The slider enables users to precisely control the attack phase of sounds, ranging from subtle, gentle slopes for softer onsets to sharp, aggressive inclines for more pronounced attacks.

This dual-mode approach allows for a wider array of sonic textures, providing musicians and producers with the tools to tailor the attack characteristics of their sounds, whether they're aiming for a natural, smooth progression or seeking a more abrupt, impactful onset.

Oversampling Selection: Available in the registered version, this feature offers options for different sound quality requirements, including no oversampling (1x), 2x, or 4x.

MIDI and Preset Bar Enhancements: Improved usability and functionality, making it easier to manage and access MIDI controls and presets.

LFO Synchronization: Ensures perfect timing by syncing the internal LFO with your DAW's BPM.

System Requirements

PC: Windows 7 or a newer version.
Mac: macOS High Sierra or a newer version. Works on both x86 and ARM.
Linux: Ubuntu 18 or a newer version.

On Windows and macOS, a one-time internet connection is required to activate the software license. After this, users can use the software offline.

Optimal performance requires an Intel Core i3 (x86) or higher, an Apple Silicon M series (ARM), and a minimum of 4 GB RAM.

What's New

OB-Xd version 3.3 update has resolved the issue where the modulation lever did not affect the global vibrato amount/depth, a problem noted in version 3.2. This fix restores the expected functionality, allowing users to modulate the vibrato LFO amount/depth with the modulation lever, as was possible in earlier versions up to 2.14 and in 3.1.

Additionally, the update includes minor fixes to improve stability and performance across various platforms and DAWs.

Free version includes fully functional Standalone app, Audio Unit and VST plug-ins.
Free for private (non-commercial) use.

can someone bypassed the FREE limitation on this ?
It makes no sense to say you’re not good at it. It’s like saying, “I’m not good at being a monk.” You are either living as a monk or you’re not.

Free Version (Edition) is a full version (fully-functional) just not all formats are available.

To be precise the limitations are
- The plugin is only VST2, Standalone and AU
- You can't use 4x oversampling

@Stevie Dude: Just curious to know, what do you miss in the free version?

just oversampling. VST3 would've been lovely too.

Well, must be my old age, bad speakers, bad hearing (only until 10 kHz) or all of the above. I cannot hear any difference with the 4x oversampling. And since I am just an amateur, I don't need a lot of instances of OBXD so the advantages of VST3 above VST2 are not so important for me.

things about aliasing, most of us can't really hear it on the spot, same like bad filtering or weird phase shifting. It will only feels wrong (on the top end) at the later stage of mixing, when things are all pushed up in levels, smashed and soaked with modulation and FX. The one you dont know where it comes from but will keep bothering your ear and forces you to do notches after notches and resonant taming and still wont fix it. Not saying it happens all the time, just prevention. It's so frustrating when it happens, so gotta be a step ahead.

I'm happy with the G-Force version so not thinking of buying this. It's just on a boring day, I know I have another OB style capable vsti lying around and it's in perfect condition, ready to go. something like that.

I hate this dev. So arrogant and selfish. After KVR meltdown where I was banned just for having pointed out that the requested priced for upgrade to Discovery 8 was a punch in the stomach to his loyal customers...The day after I was banned...

Weird, as DiscoDSP is well known for his dodgy practices. KvR stopped being a place to discuss plugins quite a while ago. Especially if you want to criticise some practices you find annoying. It's best to stick to praise only, then everybody jumps in with phrases like "here's my wallet", "can I buy two" and similar idiotic phrases. Audiosex is the best.

Years ago (10 or so) I lost my nerves in a thread about Arturia plugins. Just said how things are... but no criticism is allowed, even if it's true. I didn't get banned but I stopped visiting regularly, only when I really need to. Occasionally I notice some people I used to like/know got banned... yeah KvR sucks.

some time ago asked me to pay 30 EUR in order to download my updates, not upgrade, I said that is illegal and I can send him to court for bad commercial practices, I stopped purchasing upgrades from him and he deserves to vanish... he is an arrogant person as you say, his software deserved to be cracked 24/7

Well, if you can live without the over-sampling, you can use shell2vst by xlutop to create a fully working wrapper just a few KB in size.

Also there is the free (and rather good) Cherry Audio Oberheim plugin that you can find on their home page. It's had quite a bit of praise from people as not everyone is a fan of Cherry Audio synths (but this one is good).

This one is a XD, Cherrys Oberheim is a SEM. Completely different!

I'm a bit lost here... How a simple wrapper can unlock a feature like oversampling if this feature is not implemented in the free plugin version? Did I missed something?

ok, maybe it's obvious to most, but I don't understand why I should download a free instrument here when I can get the same data on the manufacturer's website

For us that also use free stuff, it means news about updates, releases, etc. And sometimes, (not the case with this one) the devs ask for e-mails, subscription, etc. to liberate the download (in such cases, I prefer to download from here).

The free version is not for commercial use: that’s what they say. I have no idea what is the real meaning of it

Simple: Do not use this product to make money. If you plan to do so, buy a license first.

So, with this version I cannot play a song, put it on youtube and monetize it, ok. How do they know that I'm using the free version to then sue me?

By leaving you a message in the comments asking for the name under which you purchased the license. And since your goal is to become popular, if you don't reply, you can be sued via your artist name, or at least... embarrassed. Remember the case of Avicii and Martin Garrix who both used a cracked copy of Sylenth1 in their respective videos (Team VTX for Avicci and Team AiR for Martin Garrix).

I mean, how do they know I'm using their product? Do they use some kind of digital fingerprint?
  Member 12.01.2023 86

Excellent question...
I know It's possible to watermark sample based libraries, but with a virtual instrument, I don't see another way than "watermark" the signal with some inaudible frequency in the extreme ranges... which can be easily bypassed with... a bypass filtering.
  Resident 13.12.2012 102

The license, when reffering to "commercial" usage, is specifically regarding the copying, distributing and selling of the actual plugin, not its usage for the creation of music if obtained within the specified legal constraints.

Does this allow independent panning of each voice like on the old hardsware?
