Linux version please. Just kidding.

This, although not a musical utility per se, is definitely one of those extremely useful ones and nicely programmed, that you will use to help alleviate some of the worst MS BS in Windows - terrible Start menu. Sometimes it is even useful in older MS OSes, especially W8. MS should have done this themselves if they had a trace of reason left in those stupid, blind, greedy corporate heads.

As a slightly frustrated Windows 11 user, I'm very thankful for this release. MS should be ashamed of releasing such a bloated and non-intuitive OS.

So Win 11 is the new Vista, let's hope 12 is the 7 coming back.

With Microsoft, I have one trick:
Use the last system they abandoned, it's the most stable.
I'm actually using 10 and it works very well.
I may change to 11 when they release 12 .

I'm still on WiN 10 too. I'm trying to skip 11 and move to 12.

Unfortunately resistance is useless sooner or later you will be forced to change .

Most people have ignored Windows 8 because of the unconventional UI. However, Windows 8 is very stable and is as fast as Windows XP. Much much better than Windows 7.

Windows 8 in an abomination.

True, Because of the UI madness. And it became a good OS just by installing this program (first versions ofc).
As sad as that.

@thotand I agree but... the UI was not unconventional. It really was a catastrophe of Biblical dimensions. Almost an insult.
They tried to mimic their already pathetic Windows Phone UI to the T. In big monitors. Without touchscreen.
Only full screen apps. That was the default at boot and the intention for the future. Brick-sized "icons" or full screen-only. The useful UI was just the "compatibility mode" (or classic).
That's when StartIsBack was born. And dozens of equivalents. Sad, because using that mode with a start menu as you say it was a quite good OS.
But the UI disaster was so huge that left W8 deathly injured.

The problem with win8 (or 8.1) is that it was also ignored by developers. There was much more support for 7 and then later 10.
Add to this that MS itself cut later w8 planned support timeframe and so there wasn't much interest in it since you had a support period similar to that of the more common windows 7.

You are right about the fact after changing that UI with something else for restore a conventional interface it was fast (probably because under that unconventional UI there was much new ms code dedicated to the various server versions of it). Unfortunately even if it was fast the reality is that w7 received a broader support at time so to stay safe it was better to ignore it...

You're right. Athough the reason almost nobody bothered with Win8 support is very simple: the UI was so terrible that almost nobody used it. The OS market share was like 8% (only counting Windows market, ie XP, 7, Servers and first Win10s)
They either went back to Win7 or jumped in a hurry to Win10

My studioComp is win 7 and has been from the start. But soon I must switch. On my INET comp I have win 10 with all downgraded apps I can find so it looks and behave nearly as my win 7.

if you run install of StartAllBack on W10, you'll be greeted with popup saying "This version is not intended for this Windows version."

This little gem served me a lot during the last i quess 7 years. Absolutely worth using. Funny to realize that many of us always downgrade a new win version (the start
is back proggie for win 10 has to be upgraded by this one...) to look like win 7...
Thanks R2R for this off topic post!

I'm only missing out on a few things with 8.1

No DX12, I have to add -DX11 to a shortcut.
But other then that, its been the right decision for me.

2023 is R2R switching up, are they still going to be in the music game?

It's only a guess, but I think that outside music apps the nice tools like this one are used by R2R themselves. Other example is UltraISO (or PowerISO).
Very nice.
