Sonic Projects OP-X PRO-II v1.3.0 Regged [WIN MAC]-R2R screenshot
Team R2R | 11 Jan 2023 | 65.7MB
OP-X PRO-II is a virtual analog synth originally based on the famous Oberheim OB-X. During its evolution the engine however was extended with features borrowed from various other iconic synths of this era, which makes it incredibly versatile. The range of possible sounds reaches from early monophonic synths over classics like OB-X and Jupiter-8 up to Matrix-12.

The engine of OP-X PRO-II exactly clones the technical structure of real analog voltage controlled polyphonic synths of the 80s, which were based on separate discrete circuits for each voice, which were slightly varying in sound by default because of device tolerances, and could be tuned globally by adding an offset voltage (auto-tune) or individually by adjusting trimpots on the circuit boards. All of this is implemented in OP-X PRO-II too. Which means: The single voices in fact are discrete separate mono-synths (no voice-cloning!) which slightly vary in sound by default (untuned), but can be quickly tuned or again de-tuned globally (also seamlessly if needed) by the click of dedicated buttons (imitating auto-tune) for different parameter groups. Virtual trimpots (imitating the calibration trimpots on the voice-boards) finally also allow to tune pairs of voices individually to achieve a custom detuning if needed.

Since the voices (12) are discrete they also can be individually attached or detached from the central voice allocation unit, which in the originals often could be done with device-internal dip-switches. In OP-X PRO-II this can be done with a combination of switchable master polyphony (6/8/12) and individually detachable voice-pairs (voice mute). This lets you create nearly any setup of choice. By including just one voice you e.g. can create a true mono-synth, by including 5 voices a Prophet-5 with original polyphony behaviour, by including 3 and engaging the "Oct Lower Upper" chord preset a typical 3-Osc Minimoog bass. It's all up to what you want to achieve.

Features like morphable multimode filters (dual filter design), frequency modulation, ring modulation, hard sync, voice panning with modulatable pans, an included arpeggiator/midi processor offering 32 modes (including chord presets, note doubling, step-sequencer), and finally an included effects processor give you nearly endless possibilities for sound creation.

OP-X PRO-II comes bundled with a huge included presets library offering more than 2500 awesome presets provided in themed banks. This meticulously crafted library has developed and grown over years and includes many of the most famous 80s hits sounds as well as countless well known factory presets from various classic vintage synths. Presets creation was based on extensive research and A:B tweaking to achieve a level of authenticity you won't find anywhere else. If you're into 80s sound or analog synth sound in general the presets library alone makes this synth a must-have.

there is a licensing guide pdf. read that
It makes no sense to say you’re not good at it. It’s like saying, “I’m not good at being a monk.” You are either living as a monk or you’re not.

It's working.
See if you did perform the necessary steps for licensing.
Read the "LICENSING_GUIDE.pdf" (sorry for the caps but that's the name of the manual).
The correct instructions are there.
If you click on the "blue licensing area" in the plugin, it doesn't work.
In theory, theory and practice are the same.
In practice, they're not.

I have tried to click and double click as the LICENSING_GUIDE says I am not getting a pop up to enter the info.

This is so funny!
I hadn't had such fun installing and seeing a plugin update for such a long time!

First, the installer took me back to Windows 95. Yes! Ninety Five!
It doesn't even close after installation completes.
How cool is that?

Then, the installation path and folders are superb! They're VST3 only but they're created in the untidiest way possible.
Come on, the installation folder is titled "OP-X PRO-II.vst3"?!?!
A folder titled "dot vst3" ?!?!?!
That's beautiful!
First time i saw that was with "Paulxstretch" vst3 plugin.
Who programmed this?

Then, inside there's another folder, titled "Contents" and a file titled "ENGINE_x64".
The caps are theirs. Not mine.
The programmer must have been having a bad day.
Or he's working with deaf people.

And what's inside the "Contents" folder?
THREE folders!
(now the caps are mine as i'm going insane)

These three folders are an odyssey (pun not intended) on their own! but i give up now. I can only imagine how much fun R2R had disassembling this insane VSTi and how much he must have wished to correct all the stupid mistakes and the "primary programmers school" mistakes and idiosyncracies in this new Sonic Projects' release.

R2R, if nothing else, kudos for your patience!

Oh, and i didn't even get into the licensing!

There's a blue window that shows up in the unlicensed plugin saying you should click there to license.
Don't!
It doesn't work!
Read the all caps PDF "LICENSING_GUIDE".
It explains there's a tiny section there, in the control panel, about 0.12 mm wide, where you must click to enter the licensing info.

And then, it's working!
And it even has different sizes with or without keyboard!

But it doesn't end here!
When changing from, say, a small rack version (no keyboard) to a larger keyboard version, the font size in the Presets panel also increases, making the presets list so HUGE it doesn't fit inside the GUI.
And the mouse scroll doesn't work to scroll the presets.

Ok, it works.

Thankyou very much R2R and thankyou Sonic Projects programmer for the entertaining moments.
Now, back to school you go.
In theory, theory and practice are the same.
In practice, they're not.

Yeah some installers & methods irk me, too.
But then again, I have no clue how to create installers, let alone plugins.
But if I did you can be sure i would not derp the installer....

But sometimes creative people put their energy into certain areas and are not motivated to do the other stuff, or simply don't have time...

[EDIT:
This installer will NOT install through a symlink.
I have my "Program Files\Common Files\VST3\" folder symlinked and the actual folder is in a more convenient place.
I have never had any problem installing into this folder through the symlink until now, with this plugin.

I think @ini was not kidding when he said Windows 95!

I simply renamed my symlink to "Vst3.x" and it installed fine, creating a new 'Vst3" folder.

I then manually moved the "OP-X PRO-II.vst3" folder to my preferred (symlinked) location, deleted the now-empty VST3 folder and renamed my symlink to "Vst3".

I also made a vendor folder for it ("SonicProjects") and put the "OP-X PRO-II.vst3" inside that, because that is the way it SHOULD be done.

I already had this installed (v.1.2.6) and that seems to use an R2R installer so there was no problem.

THIS installer also seems to have NO uninstaller, whereas the R2R did.
As usual another case of R2R covering for others' failures- LOL!

Yeah, i don't know what happened here but previous version (1.2.6) had an easy and clean install.

And you're absolutely correct in that the previous version had an Uninstall that Windows "Add/Remove" recognized.
This new version... not even that!

It's as if someone at Sonic Projects handed over the programming to the intern.
The synth works (barely) but everything else is just terrible as you have noticed already.
In theory, theory and practice are the same.
In practice, they're not.

All that things take place because synth was build in Synthedit. Sound only matters. And this sounds Huge!

You can blame Steinberg for this. They've added this feature called a "bundle" in a revision of VST3, like 3.6 or something like that. Several other plugins have been using this since.

I have install proper on M1 Ventura, license work too. you need reopen the plugin if you have click before other place in plugin, that the corner click trick work to get in license mask. But the names of sounds are only filled with question marks. Only if I get out the list and tab again in name of sound then I see a name. Seems the plugin missing a font.

More than five years old and the sound of this synth is still awesome:
They nailed it from the first try apparently.

Yeah I think it maybe closer to 20 years.

i mean, it's a good synth - but it clearly doesn't have as good a filter or oscillator as u-he, synapse, tal or g-force. hard to put into words, but it feels more like a low CPU digital VA synth that nails the basic analog character with extraordinary factory presets, rather than an actual super deep and authentic analog emulation with all the BLEP and ZDF engineering tech whistles. not trying to complain as I do like it - I was simply surprised when comparing side by side with Synapse Obsession and u-he Repro. Maybe its because you can't oversample OP-X.. who knows.

Not agree at all, I have the real hardware (just fixed after 4 years waiting for getting spare parts) and now get this, compared to original and it's absolutely stunning! Every voice is emulated separately so it has the same defect than original that give the beauty, the filter is emulated with perfection. U-He is another story, can be very agressive but is not fat as this one!

I have the same issue.
They work fine in Rack mode, tracking my controllers' movements.

When the Synth mode is used , they operate for a second than return to center/default. - The controls in the synth mode also visually move in the opposite direction i expected.

Same here and I have to re-enter registration informations every time I select it in a different host ! any idea to solve this ?

Edit: solved, must uninstall previous version before.

Honestly, this is undoubtedly the best emulation of all time. When I first tried it I remember crying with joy.
Reading all the comments on this release, very sympathetically, gave me a headache.
So I would suggest to those who have unsolvable problems, to give up the new sound bank, the new Vel Amp and stay with 1.2.6, or to support the manufacturer and complain to him about all the difficulties and bugs encountered..

And apparently not 100% stable. When loading a bank it already crashed my whole DAW (S1 v6, Win10) to desktop. Also causes a short screen flicker now and then.
