DigiDesign ProTools v5.0.1 R2-ZONE screenshot
ZONE | 30 December 2000 | Win9x | 8,8 MB
This version of DigiDesign ProTools digital audio software is based on the ProTools Free version that doesn't require additional DigiDesign hardware. Memory management code has been added to allow 32 tracks of audio and 127 midi tracks. The check that blocked plugins from certain manufacturers has also been removed.

This new version fixed a lot of issues:
- Version R2 solves various crashes & hangs on launch and when opening sessions
- Optimizations have sped up screen redraws, loading sessions, and other operations
- Once selected, the 48 KHz. sample rate setting will 'stick' without the need to re-open a Saved session
- A -9125 error caused by the SoundCheck session's TM symbol has been corrected
- Some users have reported a hang with the message, "Scanning Program Memory." We have made adjustments which should make Virtual Memory work better on many systems, eliminating this symptom
- A problem causing a burst of noise added at the end of recorded audio files has been corrected
- The Gueillmot ISIS soundcard now works with Pro Tools FREE
- The Turtle Beach Montego soundcard is now working better with PT FREE R2 on some systems
- The "unsteady pitch" or "warbling" occurring during playback on some systems has been fixed

Recommended System Requirements:
- Intel Pentium III
- Windows 98SE or Windows Me
- 256 MB Ram
- Phoenix or Award BIOS (recommended)
- A large, fast, hard drive for audio

Some notes by mnk:
- correct version is v5.0.1.471
- free version is limited to 8 tracks, this enhanced is up to 32
- all plugins are downloadable in separate .rar

No shit. How good would PT be today if it were still developed by Digi? It was groundbreaking back then. Seems like Avid has just been playing catchup to other DAWs.

Well I come the other way round. how awesome would Avid Audiovision be if they wouldn't have ditched it and bought pro tools instead.
Even decades later pro tools needs dozens of (highly expensive) third party addons to be a usable post production tool.
they don't even have an adr tool built in. audiovision had that in the nineties, it had a bin structure, proper filemanagement and so on.

Pro Tools has always been extremely fussy about what systems it ran on and certainly versions 6 and below never worked on multicore processors. Not sure about v7, but when 8.01 came out I could no longer use it (I had to stick to 8.0 cs1) . I think maybe they dropped support for the original mbox, or something.

This version was peculiarly designed to work on a real fat32 partition on WIN98 SE. Otherwise is impossible to correctly install / run.

You must install it with WIn98/ME compatibility

Already there is pro tools intro for free!

while there may be newer versions of pro tools intro, mini, whatever, there is a special place in my heart for pre-2002 Pro Tools Free/LE stuff. It might be my irrational love of Mac OS9 because it was the first time I could go from blank project to finished recording without tape and without any additional personnel.

If this helps someone with an ancient windows system that can use it record music for themselves and get it out to the world, it has served its purpose. Most of us don't need cutting edge technology; most of us need restrictions and commitment to the recording.

This is as essential of a tool as cool edit pro was for peeps just starting with recording.

(also, if I rememer right, the code for the pro tools plugins changed after the move to OSX. Changed in a way that does sound different because they wanted stuff to sound "better" but there is flavor in the old sound. there is a 90s pro tools sound and its here. long live the ninties!

I like what you are saying and how you say it, I am an older guy, heck I'm so old I probably fart dust...lol anyways, I have been using Cakewalk products since the middle 90's, I too switched from 4, then 8 track tape machines. I would be interested in chatting with you sometime if you are at all interested? Thanks... P.S. Didn't mean to hijack the thread here... :D
