Swarm is a sound design effect inspired by "swarm intelligence" and "particle masses" such as those employed by composer Iannis Xenakis. It clones a segment of a sample and puts those members into a "flock" that disperses in unified - sometimes stochastic - coordination.

Swarm excels in creating dense pizzicato clouds or spacey, randomized ambiences. It is a very unconventional effect with unpredictable and oftentimes wonderous results. With some experimenting, sound designers should become acquainted with the character of Swarm and how it can best be utilized in their productions.

SOURCE Select a source sample (.wav or .aif)

The SECTION control determines how much of the sample to read - starting from the beginning

SHAPE ramps up to DENSITY over time - in a loop. Lower values get to DENSITY faster. Higher values take longer to get to maximum density.

DENSITY determines how large the swarm is. It ranges from 2 to 30 members.

SIZE adjusts the average size (duration) of each member of the swarm. It ranges from 100 milliseconds to 1 second.

SPLATTER is a pitch echo effect. It simultaneously controls echo type and pitch parameters. It can be used creatively to get interesting effects from the Swarm.

MIX interpolates between the pre-Splatter and post-Splatter signals.

Well well, the most useless garbage effects plugin award ever goes to Swarm.

if it could work from live input rather than from a file it would be interesting

A wonderful little granular particle sampler that allows you to quickly create very unusual 'instruments' without unpacking the big Max/MSP or Reaktor clubs. Small, slim and very inspiring, depending on what unusual sounds you feed into the plugin. Granular effects Puremagnetik has too, but this is an instrument - and a very charming one. And the developer must be supported, he's a one of the good ones out there.

I'll say this much: I love their GUI designs.

Their GUI's are so much fun, the "CONCEPTS" that they're describing in the description is always some kind of magical 10 out of 10 for creativity, but almost all of their plugins end up doing pretty much the same thing. The glitch/splatter thing. To more or lesser success.

I've tried all of their plugins that I can find, becasue I like their style,
and all I keep out is maybe 3 of them that do that one thing the best.

Which of theirs do you prefer? Asking for a friend

Depends. Each plug-in has its own charm and belongs more or less to an effect category: there are delays with/without chorus, there are LoFi bitcrushers, there are stutter/glitch effects as well as small loop recorders that correspond most closely to granular delays. And then there are a variety of plug-ins with some kind of reverb that turn the sounds into big clouds of sound. In addition, Puremagnetik has also built a kind of pitch shifter into some plug-ins. And often the developer uses several of these effects and makes something new out of them, because what exactly happens under the surface remains a secret, unless you look at the source code of his open source plugins on Github. ;)
