True Iron is a NAMM TEC Award nominated plugin made by Shane McFee (Kazrog) in conjunction with Devin Powers (Powers Music Company). It accurately emulates 6 classic line transformers, known for their use in many of the biggest names in vintage analog outboard sound processing. Models are based on the UTC 108 X, the Malotki E4M – 4001B, the Western Electric 111C, the Haufe V178, the Marinair LO1166/A , and the UTC O-12. Bonus: Take a look behind the scenes at the gear (and producers) who inspired True Iron.

These transformers add weight, heft, and girth to your mixes and masters. The plugin features adjustable strength, input impedance, wet/dry ratio, and a special β€œCrush” control to add fat transformer saturation to tracks and buses. Plus, the CPU usage of the plugin is low enough that you can add it to every track or bus in a mix for added virtual analog warmth across your entire mix.

I love the Kush trasformers, but unfortunately the `try befdore you buy` versions are very unstable .. would this toy be sonically comparable to the Kush ones? Anyway i`ll try it. thanks Olymoon

Distortion factors are very high (ranging from 1.373% for O-12 to 4.234% for V178)
Average THD (all 'models' included) is around -70 dB.
IMD ~0.2% (Hi-Fi standard <0.1%)
All spectrum curves have some cutoffs on one or both sides of the spectrum.
IR response is literally identical for all 'transformer models' (which is weird). Exhibits a zigzag shaped post-ringing.
All modes show an uneven phase response curve, but slightly different depending on the 'model'.
Decreasing 'Strength' slowly introduces expansion, and increasing it slowly introduces compression.
It is hard to say how close these emulations are to real transformers, but they do distort, that's for sure. But the sound result is rather subtle (on reasonable setting).

Oh, I can tell you. These emulations come very close to real transformers. At least when DNA is activated. Phase response, frequency response, input level behavior, ringing ... it is all very close.
Here is a comparison of FFT measurements of True Iron vs. Analog Hardware:

But there are two main differences:
1. the cutoff frequency of True Iron is lower than usual for analog circuits.
2. the True Iron Plugin has a much higher SNR than is possible with analog devices.

What do you think about soundcloud demos posted above ? In the subtle mix version, the plugin is gluing instruments a little bit but nothing a Daw stock compressor can't do ! I don't understand this hype !! Didn't test the plugin myself though...

The comparison to compressors is a bit misleading. Transistors compress too, but they do it in a different way.

Here are a few insights:

To really act like a transformer, DNA must be activated in True Iron.

The general frequency response, as well as the harmonic structure of True Iron is dynamically dependent on the input level and not - like with many other plugins - on a drive knob, with which a static response can be set. The "Crush"-knob of True Iron is nothing else than a clean input amplifier. Just as well you can insert a Gain Plugin before True Iron and set the input level there. It is the same.

In addition to this, the structure of the harmonics is dependent on the input frequency. That means the number, composition and dependency of the harmonics generated by True Iron to each other is - even with the same input level - completely different for bass than for vocals.

Some transformers are known to break up when they are subjected to massive overload and produce a certain type of breathing, pumping distortion. And depending on the internal bit depth of your DAW and the chosen transformer model, True Iron can be driven at a very high input level and reproduce that sound. Sometimes the 48db input gain (Crush) is not enough. So you need to insert a gain plugin before True Iron that raises the level above 0dbfs, sometimes even +30dbfs.

For me personally, the effect of True Iron seems best when it is inserted on many tracks right after the cleanup eq throughout the entire mix.

I would not say that similar results can be produced with a clean compressor. Even compressor "emulations" usually don't produce such results, because the overtones are generated statically behind the compression.
