The original motivation for creating Serum was to have a dream synthesizer that did not exist: a wavetable synthesizer with a truly high-quality sound, visual and creative workflow-oriented interface to make creating and altering sounds fun instead of tedious, and the ability to "go deep" when desired - to create / import / edit / morph wavetables, and manipulate these on playback in real-time.

Serum version 2 blasts the sonic palette wide-open, offering the user ridiculous power, control and expression over their sonic output - with many oscillator types, flexible effect routing, arpeggiator and clip sequencer - the goal with Serum 2 was to empower Serum users to fully realize their sound and music ideas into form.

WAVETABLE OSCILLATOR
Serum's now legendary Wavetable Oscillator has been refined with additional flexibility. Smooth Interpolation mode allows for near-infinite frame positions in the wavetable (no morph needed). There is filtering, FM, PD, ring mod, distortions and new wavetable warps. Even we have yet to fully explore the outer reaches of what can be achieved by the dual warps available for any of the main oscillator types.

MULTISAMPLE OSCILLATOR
Enables replication of real instruments and sounds found elsewhere. Serum 2 ships with a massive, exclusive, and original library of real instruments recorded around the world, including orchestra, choir, pianos, guitars, and much more. Create or import your own from multisample recordings using the (open standard and human-readable) sfz file format.

SAMPLE OSCILLATOR
Despite the simple premise of playing back a sample, the Sample oscillator packs a punch. Despite being really good for sample playback and offering FM/PD/Distortion types, the sample oscillator also offers looping with snap loop detection, flexible loop modulation, a Rate control for 'tape stop' effects and similar, sample slicing with realtime score extraction / playback and tails mode, and more.

GRANULAR OSCILLATOR
Serum 2 adds a powerful Granular Oscillator which despite the small look packs a host of sophisticated features, allowing you to experiment in a wide range of ways of creating new sound / breathing new life into sample material.

SPECTRAL OSCILLATOR

why there are so many obsessive compulsive releases for this from different groups? its just a vst synth ! i remember having tried this years ago, it always fked up and never really worked properly because of timebombs etc is it finally any usable now in 2025 ???

all versions, and previous, even unmodified. freeze Protools on close if you loaded this plugin.
there is something wrong that is blocking the normal closing of the program.
no other plugin reacts like this. it's seems coded with the feet.

I tried to find a Sound that is using a lot of CPU power and maybe even spikes my cpu.

i went through Preset folder >> Soundscape , Seq, Pluck , Lead , SFX , Orchestral and some other Preset folders.

I could not find any Sound that is using more than 2% of my AMD 7900 CPU.

Please if there is a Sound that is using a lot CPU on your PC please let me know, i want to test it.

The Basic Bass, SEQ sounds use less than 1% even with LFO, MODs and FX

You are lucky man.
Try guitars, pads sounds.
I have I9, 32 Gb and CPU usage jumps up to 100% with some sounds.
This is only if you use presets for Serum 2. With presets from v.1.0 all is ok.

the guitar sounds are perfectly spread on my 12/24 cores. Same for the Pads around 2-4% in Task manager and Studio One 7 shows 11% usage when i play a Pad with 6 voices.

Honestly this is my 1st AMD CPU i didnt exepct it to be so powerful.

Just so you know, relying on DAW CPU metres is pointless.
You need to open the multi-core CPU metre in Task Manager:

Ctrl-Shift-Esc -> Performance -> CPU -> Right-click window - Change graph to... - Logical Processors.

Now you should have a clear read-out of all cores and will see if ONE core spikes when playing VSTi's.

The DAW shows 8-11%

Task Manager does not go above 3% on 6 Voices for consuming Pad sound.

One Guitar Sound is heavy , using 5% CPU in Task manager with just one voice.
So yes i think if i would have used my old Xeon 1230 CPU i could not use Serum 2 for these power hungry sounds.

This AMD 7900 is good for the bucks i think.

Are you talking about the whole CPU or a single core of it?

Gutted that my music machine is stuck on a lowly i5... (I should probably start using Kontakt more instead of greedy synths). My gaming laptop is better off with a Ryzen 7 5800, so, maybe I should start using that instead, although I don't really like having one machine for all. (Anyway, kinda going off topic a bit, now)

Just a note about CPU usage...

If you go to the Global tab, you can see there is a dropdown where you can select between 3 Quality settings.

What is not obvious without reading the manual, is that the Lock icon next to that dropdown menu will lock that Quality setting for all the presets you load. Each preset has it's own Quality setting, and unless you Lock it to that setting, every new preset you load will continue to go back to whatever the preset maker selected for that preset.

That setting should always stay to the same thing, but the presets will override it. Personally, I think that is a terrible decision. Global settings should override anything underneath it.

Place your Serum 1 presets in the S1 (Serum 1) folder.

Go to 'Menu' drop down in Serum 2.

Click 'Rescan Folders on Disk, your Serum 1 presets are now activated in Serum 2.

On a different note...When installing this version, the patcher failed for me multiple times (Clean install/uninstall every time). However, coupled with Bobdules' Patcher, everything activated perfectly for me.

I've tested factory guitar sounds, 8-9% CPU average (Reaper Perf Meter).

Pads were about the same, with a few reaching 13-14%. with a single instance.

So far, performance is on par with my setup I think.

If you have installed the patch and still get the message do the following. Set your firewall to block your DAW from connecting to the internet. Then delete the license file in the following location C:\Users\USERNAME\AppData\Roaming\Xfer\Serum 2. The VR version is great but it does glitch occasionally when saving presets and you get the warning again. Just delete the lic file each time. Doesn't happen often.

unfortunately, this release has timebombed today when i tried some third party wavbetables. the gui started to fall apart (in a funny way i have to admit).
i honestly dont think theres any 100% working release out there yet. 2.0.18 timebombed as well. GUI starting to bounce around.

there is currently no other post to dicuss, so im asking here.
is there anyone who has been using any of the available releases with no time bomb?
im talking of frequent use including importing third party wavetables and stuff like that.
which version are you using and what additional measures did you take (block websites in host etc.?) to make it work?

for me every single version timebombs at some point. it happens very quickly when i drag and drop 3rd party wavetables into serum.
