Wavefront Insurgency Paula Sampler v3.2 ADG AMXD-ARCADiA screenshot
Team ARCADiA | Max For Live Device | 10.43 MB
PAULA 3.2 is a Max for Live sampler that dynamically alters the sample rate based on the note played. PAULA was initially built to emulate the resampling behaviour of ProTracker 2 running on a Commodore Amiga 1200. As of version 3.0, PAULA has been fully integrated with Ableton Live’s Simpler device and includes major improvements, new features and bug fixes, including automatable Ableton warping / time stretching.

PAULA is great for adding liveliness, character and variation to samples. It is an upgraded simpler device that takes inspiration from early 90s sampling technology, combining both old and new.

PAULA 3.2 Change Log:

- Renamed .amxd devices and instrument rack so that all future updates are forwards compatible!
- Added ‘Nyquist Limit Post-Filter Adjust’ parameter.
- Added: Automatic MIDI track naming.
- Bug Fix: Default value ‘input gain’ now correctly loads at -12 dB.
- Bug Fix: Default ‘mid-range frequency’ now loads at 1.7 kHz.
- Updated Ableton ‘Info View’ description of each parameter, including hints on hover.
- Updated manual.
- UI improvements.

Playing an 8bit sample with this, vs playing the same 8bit sample in your DAW sampler... wow that difference will not be anything to write home about, wonder if the difference is audible at all. Now, 2 or more voices of the same sample (in an 8bit enviro vs 16) is a completely different story, that would be very audible, you'd have the familiar 8bit crackle which sounds amazing and was used as an effect in many songs both Amiga and C64, esp audible with beating waveforms.
Depends on who you ask, as to how to get this authentic, lots of ppl still use 8bit trackers. Personally I go with the ST-01 samples in a modern DAW with all the benefits that bring, those samples are so insanely recognizable anyway that there's more than enough Amiga vibes. Done enough 4channel tracking, why keep doing that in 2025... been there, done that, it is WAY more fun to see what you can squeeze out of those samples with modern tools, give them new life.
