After the success of the outstanding Neve 5059 Summing profiles we just had to do the Dangerous 2BUS+ and we were asked over and over again to sample it... We did it for you and you will not be disappointed! 19 profiles are included in this pack, all 16 channels, Harmonics, Paralimiter and X-Transformer profiles.

I've definitely had great experiences in both worlds — analog summing and ITB mixing — but find myself happier now for the first time with true sampled analog summing for the sonics and the gain-staging convenience it provides in the box. I'm greedy, I always wanted the best of both worlds, I wanted my cake AND eat it... now you can too.

For the very first time in the box you can now have Dangerous Summing profiles on all 16/24/48/124 or 256 channels inside your DAW thanks to AnalogXAi and modern Black Box Sampling Techniques ;-) We sampled all 16 Channels of this famous summing unit and we also captured the X-Transformer, Paralimiter and Harmonics eelements of the unit to bring you an full suit of profiles to let loose on your digital / now analog productions ;-)

The Dangerous 2-Bus+ is a 16-channel analogue summing mixer designed from the ground up with innovative audio processors to add colour and musicality to a mix.

The Dangerous 2-Bus+ includes three processors called Harmonics, Paralimit and X-former which affect the summed signal differently. Harmonics as its name suggests is a tuned harmonic distortion generator which is routed in parallel and is set with a Blend to control the amount of processing applied. The Paralimit is a parallel FET limiter designed to add punch and life without affecting the natural dynamic of the signal. X-former engages a pair of custom transformers and lets you control how much saturation is the applied to the core.

Although the 2-Bus+ features powerful colour options, it remains at its heart a clean and expensive sound associated with the original 2-Bus, giving the user entire control over the colouration (or lack of) as an artistic choice rather than by default.

Dangerous 2-bus+ Summing Profiles feature:

The Paralimit feature. According to the manufacturer, it’s a FET limiter “set on stun” and, as the name suggests, it’s a parallel process: the compressed signal is sent to the mix using the Paralimit knob on the front panel. To my ears it sounds like the processed signal is first filtered by adding a lot of mid range and treble, then smashed by the limiter. The result is very refreshing on drums, acoustic guitar, vocals and so on — in short, any instrument that could benefit from some extra mid–range and treble energy without sounding ‘pokey’. The result is akin to that of a harmonic enhancer such as the Aphex Aural Exciter, but it’s smoother-sounding than that, and it’s very seductive — I wouldn’t mind having it available on all 16 channels! The Dangerous 2–Bus+ profiles is a perfect digital sampled rendition of an amazing active summing mixer, and the three analogue tone processors act as ‘vitamin injectors’ for stereo stems or the entire mix: super–clean sonics, FET–limited sound, or transformer saturation, the choice is yours.

I don't know what to make of it. The saturation is good, but the sweet spot is very small, which makes the whole handling very difficult.

Compressors without a VU meter? Yes of course, you should mix with your ears. But somehow I don't believe that's the future. As I said, the saturations usually sound very good, which is why it works so well with guitars, because they're distorted to the max anyway. But for more delicate things like voice and vocals, I have my doubts. The sweet spot is simply too small, which is very unusual for hardware.

I also set this model here to 7 stereo groups (i.e. used 14 of the 16 channels of the summing unit), and honestly, it doesn't sound any better to my ears. I hear almost no difference. You really have to be very careful not to drive in too hot, otherwise the sound immediately falls apart completely and distorts. In my opinion, it's not worth the work, especially because it hardly makes a difference and I even find normal plugins better.

I don't know what to make of it. I don't understand the hype. What do you think?

Hype is hype. Just like AA plugins.
Come here just to try the software and buy it afterwards.
If I don't like the software I will just DELETE it.

Theres nothing hype about this tech, nor is there a blanketed hype across all AA plugins. Some? sure, but def not all.

thanks for sharing your perspective. yes, i've been around for a while and i make my living mixing. my understanding of this technology is that it is indeed supposed to be a small revolution. but yeah, i'm 90% unconvinced. the remaining 10% are profiles that i find really convincing. funnily enough, these include profiles that i need the least, namely guitar pedals. but they sound so damn good, and i mean on vocals. the distortion sounds like my manley hardware when you really drive it in. it's really something new in terms of quality. but i think the other profiles all sound the same. i prefer to use plugins.

there are some winners and some that are just whatever. this one is one of the "whatevers". Dont let this influence your decision if you have not tried some of the others. There are some profiles out there that sound very close to the real deal. As far as VU meters, you can just use your DAW or whatever third party VU. Convenient, no, but it works for now. I reckon we will see more from this tech in the coming years, as it matures. AnalogX is already working on a more fully featured plugin to load their snapshots, but somebody will come along and do with this, what acustica did whatever the f they use lol. Creating an actual plugin. Think of this as like Nebula in its infancy.

Why? This sounds like shit. I set up 16 channels. No separation. What comes out is only SATURATION. Nah, this is stupid. You think this sounds like analog gear? hahaha this is so funny. This sounds like Nomad Factory 1999 plugins. Really, don't waste peoples time. It might work exceptionally well with guitar amps and pedals - the pedals are actually the BEST SOUNDING SATURATION I've heard in the box. But this tech seems that it's unable to represent time based and dynamically things. The sweet spot is very small. Not like analog gear at all.

The ways of saying it are as important as what we are going to say. You have to take care of that part...and returning to the debate, I understand what you mean; It seems that the fact that it is a linear technology is a great drawback. This fact separates it from the realism that we seek to achieve. Can we say that it is unnatural?

You are right, I’m sorry for the way I said it. But man, I was pissed. I already invested like 20 hours to setup NAM in dual mono, installed other tools like BlieCats AudioPatchwork and Byode. And of course, NAM and Proteus. I made null tests to check if I was doing everything right.

After hours of testing and analyzing probably all available profiles, from preamps, converters, compressors to saturation and tape, this is my conclusion as someone who gets paid as a mixer:

1. the pedals sound gorgeous. The sound is like hardware. I don’t have the pedals, but I can immediately tell that the quality of saturation is like hardware.
This is probably the reason why this tech works exceptionally well for guitarists who NEED nothing but good sounding amps/distortion.

2. the sweet spot is very small. Is there any? First, the signal doesn’t change much, then it breaks, falls apart, becomes very low in volume, and then it distorts heavily. Nah, that’s ugly.

3. dynamics don’t work well. Is the SSL bus compressor doing anything? Yeah, it’s doing something. Do I like it? I don’t think so. The SSL bus compressors from SSL or Anslog Obsession are so good, and you can control everything!

4. the whole handling is bullshit. Ok, it’s a new tech, and the GUI isn’t there yet.

5. you will never be able to tweak machine learning g profiles in real time. Because they’re not algorithms. It’s almost like IRs. So, the next logical step was to create one plugin and GuI for each hardware. So, for example, someone will build an 1176 GUI with different profiles for each position you can chose from. And this is exactly what AA does. I’m not that it’s not machine learning but IR. But still, we would be at the same trading point of having to give up the advantage of realtime modification vs static responses.

To me, this is all hype. Nothing we should even consider using or trying. Not yet. Except for the pedals or if you were after heavy, high quality sounding distortion.

No expert, no professional mix engineer would even think about it.

I find some of the dynamic profiles are great. I forget which ones off the top of my head, but theres a few from past to future that i saved as setups.

Same with saturation. A few great ones, but like you said, the sweet spot is limited.

You are a mix engineer, do you have any analog gear you work with? Something to compare these to? I have a decent collection myself, and have worked with pretty much every major piece of hardware over the years in various studios, and some of the profiles ive tested come extremely close.

As far as comparing them to the SSL comp, or Analog obsession (most of his stuff is terrible, including the SSL comp), its hard to compare the two, its apples to oranges.

I personally am looking forward to somebody doing what AA does with this, i think a few years from now we can have some really cool stuff.

im no expert, as im forever in the pursuit of knowledge, yet i am a professional. Im more of a producer, but being a producer nowadays means you are also a mixing engineer, even a mastering engineer. I mix and master 90% of the stuff i do, and I do use this tech, and am excited for more of it to come out. For what its worth, ive had songs placed with a major label recently, where i used a couple of the Past to Future snapshots.

To each their own, but im hoping you dont write it off based off your first impression! Theres some really great stuff. It is finnicky, ill give you that, and not every program works with all material, some work better with drums, some with the mix buss, etc etc. When they work, they work really well. Maybe its not for you, at least in its current state, but dont be afraid to check back in a couple years if you see something new being "hyped".

Currently, except for my hq analog recording chain, I moved to ITB. I had decent hardware. And I still have access to a studio with good vintage gear, from Pultec, 1176, 176, La2A, Sta-Level, to hardware plate and analog desk.

What are your favorite profiles? I tried them all. I didn’t like them
On my vocals , and not on my mix bus. Am I missing something?

I don't think everyone realizes the intrinsic limitations of IRs and Neural Net. It's a large topic that I'm still not well-versed in even after researching it quite a bit, but even a brief read on it will show that, what may be considered sub-par work is actually unavoidable walls. Again, expectations and necessity is what it comes down to. I actually use more than a few IRs that sound only vaguely like their hardware counterparts and I still use them because it does something to my audio that I like. That's not to say that poor workmanship should be rewarded, or everything is useful, but to realize the limitations of the technology being used. No one needs to get GS passionate about it. XD
