Mikro Prism is perhaps the best free synth I have ever downloaded. Working on a similar principle to expensive percussive software synthesisers its ease of use makes it the instrument of choice for creating new sounds from scratch.
What Native Instruments say about it: "In comparison to other synthesizers, the most obvious difference is that there are no real oscillators or samples. This is because MIKRO PRISM is based on a Modal synthesis model, and sound is created by an Exciter, which creates impulses or continuous noise. MIKRO PRISM supplies the real twist when this ‘noise’ is fed into its Modal Bank. This module has multiple resonating band-pass filters per voice, similar to Additive synthesis, creating a unique character."
