DISCOVER | 21 MARCH 2015 | 132MB
The thing about toy pianos is this: they’re scary. Just like a playground at midnight with one empty swing moving; or a rocking horse in a dusty, forgotten nursery suddenly creaking against the floorboard; or the doll whose eyes follow you from across the room.

Don’t turn your back on them.

Haunted Piano is created from multiple samples of two toy pianos which between them span a full three octave range.

We sampled them at midnight, by candlelight, when the moon was full (and at 24-bit, natch). Using three velocity layers and two round robin sets, we created an eminently playable and responsive virtual toy piano, which can sound just as clunky and naive as the originals.

But then we went a bit further down the spookiness path, pushing the sound of the virtual instrument into sound-design territory.

The samples can be reversed with the click of a button, to give eery builds and surprise tones, or to recall those “backwards masking” moments so favoured by demonic rock bands.

They can also be force-transposed down by three octaves for groaning, bottom-of-the-sea, sepulchral noises and cavernous drones; or pitched up two octaves for tiny, sparkling fairy-bell sounds that glitter and gleam.

Rhythmic Robot Audio Haunted Piano KONTAKT-DISCOVER screenshot
The base sound covers a five-octave span in the middle of your keyboard, the middle three octaves of which are chromatically sampled.

But the fun doesn’t stop there. At the top of the MIDI key range we’ve crammed in 75 further sounds made by the toy pianos under duress – when we tipped them over, shook them, dropped them, creaked their lid hinges, rattled their keys or otherwise abused them.

These sounds are mapped across two octaves and three fixed velocity layers for easy access within your DAW, and comprise a wide range of effects noises, sound-design starting points and other sonic goodness.

They, too, can be force-transposed down or up, allowing them to be used as everything from apocalyptic thunder sounds to splintery little percussive details.

Attack and Decay controls allow you to mould the base sound a bit, while Bad Tuning does what it says on the knob and lets you add a touch of drift or a full-on dose of threatening unpleasantness for cacophonic, atonal moments.

Key Clunk controls the level of the 50 key-off samples, which are selected randomly and which add a great degree of realism to the sound.

The rear panel offers up two specially selected effects: echo (which is, of course, the scariest of the effects groups) and reverb (for getting that dark-mass-in-the-cathedral-crypt spaciousness to the sound).

On the front panel, meanwhile, you can switch between two amp cabs and a convolved graphite microphone to change the colour and tonality of the sound.

The graphite mic in particular sounds excellent on this instrument – you can see it in the photo above and hear it on the demo track in several places.

Haunted Piano fills two main roles: played straight, it offers an extremely realistic and convincing toy piano instrument, while with some of its more esoteric options enabled it provides a range of organic sound design textures that work in all kinds of musical styles, particularly those with a tendency towards the Dark Side.

Just don’t feed it after midnight…

Its absolutely OK that uploaders will earn money if they buy and share for the community..but there are a lot of 1-click-hosters with affiliate program that also offers acceptable speed for free users. Uploaded and Rapidgator are really the worst of all for free downloading. 30-50kb/sec, 1download in 3 hours (no matter how big they are) etc. Thats really mega annoying. All I can say..for bigger downloads (>50MB) I also wait till they occur on other sites with other download options. And I'm sorry..but I bet lot of others also will do so. So DISCOVER wont even earn the affiliate money the hoster would pay for the downloads of free users. I think if he and others who also use only this 2 sharehosters would do an economical calculation they would come to the conclusion they could earn more affiliate money by offering hosters with affiliate program that provide an acceptable speed also for free users because they would have 100% more downloads in their statistics.

How many times do we have to have this conversation? I mean really. It's not our concern how we would prefer him to do it because this is what he offered and these discussions are certainly not what the comments are for. And you're completely wrong in your assumption and I would know because I've analyzed both scenarios from the point of view of an uploader. Beyond that you guys are getting tons of fast links on other posts. Give us a break. You get waited on hand and foot all for free and there is never a shortage of complaints. Any economical calculations there?

PS check your AudioSex mailbox. Another greedy bastard writing you there.

Well I'm sure Discover hates risking his neck while working his ass off buying, packaging, uploading and reuploading software only to be greeted with these kinds of conversations. Try stepping in his shoes for a week and see how quickly your view changes.

This is only 132mb is it not????? So wait for 2-3 hrs for some more free shit, take that time to study & play the other free shit you downloaded with whatever mirror, or, buy a premium on one of the two dreaded hosting sites only used by most uploaders who just want to make $$$$$, whatever you do, how about some gratitude for the time taken to share this stuff? Why be so consumed with
who wants to make or get what
blah, blah, blah shit? I don't think it's fair to start making assumptions for other peeps... Whatever the uploaders motive is none of my damn business! I do however appreciate the posts that are so readily available for all of us regardless of " host's speeds" & " shit-I have to wait for an hour or two"
That's my two cents... lol Thanks DISCOVER

Ul was voted as main host on here when it used to be one of the fastest free servers, now it's one of the slowest... excruciating slow. And people expect nobody to kick up a stink about it? If this is a community then people should be allowed to say what they want without fear of being hounded. Seen it too many times, which is why I torrent the vast majority nowadays.

screenshotIt's only excruciatingly slow if you never pay for an account and there are plenty of posts with fast links, more now than ever before. However this isn't utopia so some posts aren't gonna be perfect for everyone. Besides that this isn't a primary hoster poll so why are we even discussing it? Uploaded is the primary hoster on every site on the planet, the only difference here is that we allow contributors to control whether mirrors can be posted and that's because releases have to be bought or supplied so some actually have to worry about procuring new stuff rather than exploiting the efforts of others and mass mirroring their content. The fact that you can even use the phrase kick up a stink like we owe people something is beyond ludicrous to me and why the P2P scene should take a break because some of you guys have lost your damn minds. It's one of the reasons HORiZON has been MIA as of late from what I understand. They've switched from sharing globally to sharing internally and I'm starting to do the same myself, it just feels right. The funny thing is that when I posted for them I always used at least one link that's good for free users (even though it takes me a lot longer to up) so this discussion doesn't even relate to me but it still grates on my nerves. The entitlement attitude that is so prevalent today is utter insanity and I don't blame any teams or individuals that have had it up to here with that nonsense because I certainly have. Sakurahime's status sums it all up: our wealth breeds emptiness. What some of you need is a wake-up call so you can get a little perspective and suddenly that change that you can spend for a year of downloading tens of thousands of dollars worth of software (likely spent at the local bar in one night) might seem like a pretty sweet deal. Or better yet not even having access to releases at any price.

Take any community, anywhere on the planet and there are rules (the cornerstone of any good community) and here one of them is that the comments aren't for complaining about links:
Comments are open to discuss the release, not to make pointless statements, post requests or requests for new links.

Seen it too many times even though it's clearly stated and I've reiterated it for years now. Your definition of community is really convenient, it's basically a selfish free-for-all where every decision has to center around what's best for you even extending so far as to encompass finding ways around you paying for an account but still maxing out your connection speed. My definition of the word community is where everyones needs are taken into account including the contributors without whom there'd be no releases with any kind of links, including those torrents that you like so much. The staff and contributors should be able to come into their pro bono jobs of supporting the self-entitled without being hounded about what links are available on a post especially considering it's against the rules in the first place. It's why internals have become so commonplace and I guarantee you that you won't be finding those shares on any torrents. That's why I will do everything in my power to support good people that understand the sacrifices that the teams, staff and contributors make everyday just so you can come into a banquet fit for a king only for them to hear someone complain that not enough caviar was served. This attitude must be especially painful for developers to read, I'm honestly embarrassed that they do and you should be too. People with those kinds of attitudes should just be shut out even if that means looking into new avenues of distribution. Maybe it's time for a new scene where the caliber of members meets the caliber of teams because seeing a senior member telling a respected P2P team that they hate that they're exploiting members for profit really drives home the gravity of the atrocious state of things. DISCOVER's release count is somewhere along the line of 6,000. That's 6 fucking thousand releases that the team has purchased/had supplied, created an amazing nfo, packed, uploaded, reuploaded and even broken up into smaller packs so you could get just what you needed with minimum hassle. 6,000 times that they've risked their freedom to help you find a voice...to help you along your musical journey with the same tools that are used by the best of them even if you were broke. That's why while complaints are being leveled against teams for the links they've chosen so that they're able to continue risking their freedom to provide you with quality content that you won't appreciate, some are logging in to a surprise 20% CPU savings in the internal of their favorite new synth.
