A powerful strings sample library for Kontakt Player
Cinematic Studio Strings is a library bursting with character. Featuring Australia’s finest musicians and meticulously recorded in a world-class scoring stage, CSS boasts a gorgeous sound, stunning true-to-life dynamics and a wide variety of articulations. With an intuitive and efficient GUI, CSS was created to meet the demands of working composers in today’s film, TV and video game industries. This outstanding orchestral strings library for Kontakt and Kontakt Player is available now at a very affordable price.

INTRODUCING CINEMATIC STUDIO STRINGS
CSS features a Hollywood-style string section, recorded in position in Australia’s premiere scoring stage – Trackdown. From the soaring colourful vibrato of the high violins to the dark and woody textures of the low cello and bass notes, you’ll be instantly inspired. Our aim was to create an instrument that’s instantly playable, sounds great out-of-the-box and is backed up by speedy customer support.

GROUNDBREAKING INTERFACE
At the heart of CSS is its cutting edge GUI, building on our previous critically-acclaimed library Cinematic Strings 2. This means a short-but-sweet patch list, easily assignable keyswitches and MIDI CCs, and a full mixer with output routing options plus reverb. These features and many others are all accessible via the main GUI page, you’ll have CSS working alongside you on your latest project within minutes.

REALISTIC AND EXPRESSIVE
CSS features a stunningly realistic legato engine. We painstakingly recorded true legato transitions for each note, up and down, including a beautiful portamento. We also recorded ‘re-bow’ samples, meaning you can play repeated legato notes smoothly and with true-legato realism. For more information please check out the Legato Introduction video in the Videos section below.

LIVE SOUND, NO REVERB REQUIRED
With smooth legato, punchy spiccatos, inspiring textural harmonics and con sordino, CSS covers a wide range of the sound palette afforded by a world-class string section. We’ve kept an authentic, human element in the sound, so you’ll feel like you’re at a live session. With this new level of realism, you’ll feel comfortable using CSS without reverb; in fact, we recommend it! All of our demos were created without reverb – all you hear is the natural air captured in the samples.

FULLY MIXED - LOAD AND PLAY
We used a variety of beautiful ribbon and condenser microphones to record CSS at three distances, which you can combine to create your own unique mix either inside Kontakt or via the newly included output-routing option. Alternatively, you can use our pre-mixed combination of all 3 if you want a great sound with fewer resources. Full and Lite Ensemble patches optimise workflow and are perfect for sketching or filling out a track.

Will this library load in latest Kontakt using Kitty script? I've had no luck with newer releases unless installer is an iso.

Funny.

To my ears this string library has always sounded pretty awful. Recorded in Sydney's Trackdown Studio it bears all the problematic hallmarks of that room. Also, the legato transitions sound terrible.

I know many people like these libraries and Im grateful for the upload, but to me they are unusable in any orchestral context.

Wrong on all counts except for the room not being that great.

You may need to get your ears checked, because besides the closer/darker tone of Trackdown, this is still the best string library on the market to date. I know tons of people in the VI composer world that swear by this library, including top film and video game composers. If you know how to mix orchestral sample libraries, you can get an amazing sound out of CSS, just look at Joel Dollie's tutorials for example.

The legato is has been the best in class for half a decade, only recently having competition with PS's Vista and Shitfire's Appassionata(and soon to be beaten by Pacific). The only drawback being the variable delay, which if you're clever enough, you know how to work around that. CSS's legatos are smooth and sound realistic across all dynamics, at all 3 speeds, it's really a wonder. And somehow in this update he has improved them further with re-editing.

This sample set is renowned for being the most comprehensive and consistent ever. No other developer even comes close to delivering the same consistency in sampling performance, dynamics, rr's, timing, etc across all articulations and instruments. For some reason, multi-million dollar developers with dozens of employees can't manage to match the simple ask of in-time, consistent sampling that one man alone has managed to accomplish.

You're seriously missing out if you've been sleeping on this library just because of the lackluster acoustics. It is not dry by any means and more than useable. In fact it's been the most useable string library to date. If you disagree with this you either suffer with OT's nasty sounding Teldex(and pretty lackluster sampling and awful legato), Shitfire's terrible sampling and editing(it is a grand shame that they have exclusive rights to sample at Air and Abbey Road), or VSL or some other dogshit dry room boomer developer that hasn't innovated since the early 2000s and make orchestral sample libraries that might as well be gross sounding synths with no life or performance in their sampling.

Well, I think I was pretty clear that my comment was simply my impression and hardly categorical.

Id be disinclined to use phrases like "best (or "worst" ftm) string library on the market", but if I did, Id probably want to employ some pretty serious qualifiers. But that's just me.

Anyway, Ive been known to be wrong once or twice before so Ill reinvestigate this version of the library but the demos provided don't sound promising.

Each to their own.

One can hardly be blamed for overlooking a sample library based off of some demos here and there. I've always found Wallbanks demos to be quite good, especially when he's pretty much the only one doing them. Other devs tend to rely on midi wizards to make their mediocre products sound any good. Just take Spitfire for example, all of the doofus in house "composers" tend to make demos that make you not want to buy the product, including those done by the founders. Their acclaim when it comes to demos is largely as a result of Andy Blaney's genius. Without his uncanny ability to make Spitfire's lackluster sampling sound realistic with incredible demos I would fear for Spitfire's bottom line as his demos undoubtedly pushed much of their sales.

Anyway, I think I qualified my statements sufficiently when I said that despite the lackluster acoustics of Trackdown, the library is supreme in many other aspects. I can't help but take issue with statements like the legato being terrible, the library being unusable despite being mine and many others' workhorse string library.

Having used the library extensively for years now I refuse to use a lot of other libraries because of the above mentioned issues. CSS will soon be replaced by Performance Samples' Pacific though in a few weeks though, so this update is quite tardy.

Please, I would like to hear more about your dislike for Shitfire... Maybe even PM me with some of the finer details.

Sincerely,
Fellow Spitfire hater. (I don't hate them, just strongly dislike them.
Hey. I am definitely not famous...

Fair enough.

All libraries have their own inherent issues. I don't generally prefer one over another.... It all comes down to what works in any given composition. I tend to compose orchestral parts on a piano and, depending on their requirements,,,,,,, Ill try out multiple libraries. Spitfire has a place, as does LASS (2, not 3), VSL, OT, and countless others. Its not a team sport to me and I have no particular preference of one over another.

It depends entirely on the colour required for the piece.

Generally, Im looking for realism.

And to my ear, these libraries simply don't cut it. They sound like some of the very first string libraries to me. Im reminded of QL.

Having said all that I take your recommendation as seriously as anyone else's and Im looking forward to re-trying this library. I look forward to coming back here praising it to the heavens and admitting I was utterly mistaken.

Nice, someone actually gets it. :)
Check out SWAM Strings if you need to express yourself precisely. Recorded sample libraries will not cut it (ever), regardless of how much passion is poured into them. Good for demos, not for final product.
Ofc to make SWAM sound decent, a lot of CCs needs to be moving. But I found that to be much more worthy exercise than trying to work around limitations of high profile sampled libs, CSS included. It's all smoke and mirrors.
Thank you for helping us help you help us all.

you're right about spitfire, i tried all their expensive stuff thanks to this site, i couldnt believe the awful editing work they have done, the crossfades were terrible for the most important part of a string library, the legatos. You could hear a jolty change in the samples for every note. I came across multiple posts on gearslutz and vi for this and spitfire just chose to ignore their actual paying customers for problems that made these products mostly unusable.
They just move onto the next thing and rarely make updates. What good is the quality of the samples when the editing and playability is some half-assed cut corner work.
I believe theres a single guy behind CSS and the effort and care he has put in his products makes me actually want to buy his stuff to support him, which someday hopefully
just look at the release notes and you'll get an idea of the care for details behind this product.

Exactly. It is a testament to the superiority of one man passion projects versus hastily scrapped together mediocre rehashed money grabs made by multi-dollar companies with dozens of employees.

Another one man developer of note is Jasper Blunk's Performance Samples. He has single-handedly pushed realism in sampling further than any other developer in the past few years. Most companies are still sampling like it's 2014, with primitive legato sampling and scripting and mediocre sampling techniques creating unrealistic, dead and lifeless sounding samples.

The whole mantra of Performance Samples is sampling in new and creative ways that evoke better performances out of players to create lively and more realistic samples. Jasper's upcoming Pacific Strings has the most realistic and live sounding legato we've ever heard. Other articulations are also sounding more lively than any other string library due to Jasper's innovative sampling techniques which you can read more about on their website.
