PinkNoise Studio - Epik4 Kontakt edition screenshot
Kontakt | 1.0 GB
EPIK4 Kontakt edition is a sample library based on the sounds of KAWAI K4 synthesizer from the late 80s.

The KAWAI K4 was released in 1989 as a competitor of Roland D-50. In this point of view, EPIK4 can be considered as a sister of DEEPFLIGHT, but while the Roland D-50 has a warm analogue character, the K4's digital filter gives you fuzzy but still warm sounds.

Features:

• 270 Kontakt patches in 8 categories
- [All layers]* - 114
- K4 Arp & Short Key - 24
- K4 Atmosphere & Pad - 25
- K4 Bass & Lead (poly) - 22
- K4 Experimental & FX - 10
- K4 Key & PolySynth - 30
- K4 Monosynth - 25
- K4 String & Orchestral - 20

• 1.30 GB multisamples (1140 wav files)

• 12 midi controllable knobs for realtime tweaking and for midi automation of the most important synth parameters

• extensive editing techniques: multiple velocity layers, alternate triggering and sample starts to achieve fat, lively and vivid synth sounds

* The [All Layers] is a special folder for sound designers. It contains all melodic instrument layers separately. The patches are “clean”, without any filter effect and with default envelope settings. They can be useful if you want to create new sounds from scratch.

K1, K4, K5000<--especially, are all really great synths for ambient sounds, background. Really lovely, and to the point. Great synths. They made really nice sounding ROM waveforms for K1 and K4 [K5 is additive]. Thank you for releasing this!

I used to own a K4, which disintegrated before I could properly sample it. Is this the actual K4 patch library (which I keep seeing for sale online in .sf2 format), or just a bunch of new sounds created by a K4? The site doesn't actually say one way or the other.

(Edit: unfortunately, it's an all-new library created using a K4 as its basis; it has none of the original K4 factory patches, which is a shame. However, I think the .sf2 library floating around somewhere is the actual factory patches and multis. Someone should either extensively sample the default library one of these days in Kontakt format, or Kawai should pull a Korg and release a virtual K4. It's a beautiful instrument, and the default library was incredible)

Here's the SoundFont 2 link! Man, if somebody actually has this ...

Unfortunately not the original bank sounds. What a pity.

The problem with sample packs for Kontakt or any sampler is that you don't have the same envelopes, the same filters and the same effects than the original hardware has.So don't expect exactly the same sound at the end.

It's not the actual K4 patch library, it's all-new sounds somebody created using a K4. From what I can tell, some of the actual synth parameters (envelope, filters) were recreated and are even MIDI-controllable, but it sounds like most of the patches in this library were just sampled as-is from user presets. There's also an arpeggiator, which the K4 didn't have. If you go to that SoundFont link I posted above, there's a list of presets that are actually the K4 factory presets and multis.

There's also a freeware virtual K4 floating around, which is unfortunately for Windoze only and seems to require certain hardware to use. As I have a Mac, I can't test it.

You are right, a sampled synth will never be as flexible as the original.
