I thought we were not supposed to use the word Gypsy, because the Roma people feel it is prejudicial.

I've never thought a bad thing in my life about Roma people! But we need our word back to use for these plugin developers, "label owners", and so on. We are blaming the Thieves for too much. :)

Jews (yevrey in Russian) or people of Israel?
Nemets (singular)/Nemtsi (plural) in Russian, instead of Germans, Deutschers :D I don't think Gypsy is a bad word... In Russian, Gypsy is Tsygan (spell: tsee gun) and they call themselves Tsygane (plural), not Roma..
Just a bad prejudice..

Gypsy is just one of those words that describe a people, but can also be used pejoratively. No expert here, but I'd say it's not a slur in and of itself.

Gypsy are proud to be Gypsy in Europe. There is nothing negative about this word, unless someone put it this way.
It's a complete culture, where music is very important.
Example: Django Reinhardt was a Tsigan, (Nothern Gypsy).
Also Diego el Cigala, is a Gypsy.
