HITMAKER SDX
A HIT…RIGHT OUT OF THE GATE!
Drums, straight from the man who defined the sound of the ’80s: Hugh Padgham.

If you spend ten minutes on a random radio station anywhere in the world, the likelihood that you catch one of Hugh Padgham’s productions is strikingly high. From some of the most iconic songs by Phil Collins, Genesis, The Police and Sting to seminal tracks by the likes of Kate Bush, Peter Gabriel, David Bowie, The Human League, Paul Young, Melissa Etheridge and Paul McCartney, Hugh has had a hand in all. At that, not only did he help sonically package some truly timeless pieces of music, he also single-handedly pioneered the sound of an era. Ever wondered who the mastermind behind the iconic gated reverb snare drum was? That’s Hugh. Or who the pioneering engineers behind blending acoustic and electronic drums were? Hugh was definitely one of them. Needless to say, his footprint in music history, and especially so when it comes to retooling the role of the drums in a production, couldn’t be more obvious.

In this SDX, Hugh set out to create an all-encompassing source of acoustic and electronic drums inspired by not only the ’80s and ’90s eras, but also one designed to reflect some of the most known drummers and album mileposts in his body of work. All in all, six unique acoustic kits were sourced as well as a massive collection of classic vintage hardware drum machines – all captured in the breathtaking ambience of the immaculate sonic marvel that is the British Grove Studios in London, UK. To add an ever more organic and period-correct flavor, all drums and machines were recorded to tape before converted digitally. On top of that, the machines were amped through a PA system in the same ambience as the acoustic drums and captured using a similar microphone setup. This gives you an awe-inspiring canvas of acoustic and electronic sounds that you seamlessly can blend, mix, match and surgically modify using the broad set of onboard design tools available in Superior Drummer 3. Of course, should you want Hugh’s mixes right off the bat, there is a hefty amount of his custom presets included.

This SDX gives you some of the greatest kits ever played and some of the most iconic drum machines ever created, all sonically inspired by some of the greatest music ever recorded by the very man who once put it down on tape. Simply put: If you’re looking for a source of drums that you can use to produce hits right out of the gate with, this SDX is it.

Six (6) acoustic drum kits and upwards of 400 classic drum machine sounds
Recorded to analog tape making use of four legendary vintage consoles
Extra selections of acoustic kicks, snares and cymbals
Recorded by four-time Grammy Award-winning producer/mixer/engineer Hugh Padgham (Phil Collins, Genesis, Sting, The Police)
Inspired by some of the most defining works in Hugh’s discography
Captured at British Grove Studios in London, England
A generous selection of mix-ready presets by Hugh Padgham
Includes a bespoke MIDI library of drum grooves and fills inspired by Padgham’s discography

A MARRIAGE OF
ACOUSTIC & ELECTRONIC.
6 KITS | 11 MACHINES | MORE THAN 400 ELECTRONIC SOUNDS
Acoustic drum kits and re-amped machines, captured in the same ambience.

Much like the groundbreaking works Hugh Padgham was involved in making in the ’80s and ’90s, this SDX is a marriage of acoustic and electronic. What makes this collection even more unique is that both elements were recorded to tape and, on top of that, each electronic sound re-amped through a PA system and captured with several ambience microphones in the same room as the drums. This, in fact, was one of the tricks Hugh frequently employed back in the day to give the sometimes lifeless machines a needed boost of power, punch, grit and energy.

The electronic portion of the SDX was based on eleven of the most era-defining and now sought-after hardware drum machines of the 1980s: Roland*’s TR series, Simmons*, Oberheim*, Linn* and more. The acoustic part is made up of six complete kits, of which four were directly modeled after the sound and the drummers on some of Hugh’s most iconic productions: Vinnie Colaiuta, Manu Katché, Stewart Copeland and, of course, Phil Collins.

94 GB is appr half the size of the latest Area 33 SDX. Hitmaker SDX is lightweight.

Although I appreciate the share, the sound of this SDX reminds me of the old under developed 1st generation of Superior Drummer & EZdrummer.

Even the most recent demos found confirm this.

Drum parts sound unnatural, prematurely cutoff and, over processed. My humble opinion.

Was expecting Rooms of Hansa level of recording & final product.

What? Bollocks!

To be fair, the kit is influenced by that Padgham guy whose technique relies on gated drums fed through a talk-back mic.

Unnatural(talk-back mic routing) and prematurely cut off(gated) are part of his sound but I get your point. It doesnt quite mix as well with other non-processed instruments.

You really need to read about the author of this library to understand where the sound comes from.

If you're lookink for typical clean and clear kits, this is definitely not one of them. It's more like a bunch of results of Hugh's experiments over his career.

The library should be obviously interesting for people who likes late 80s and 90s pop music.

thanks for sharing.

Just wondering why any of these new SDX or EZX library(s) can't even top the default straight after launch EZDrummer 3 factory library sound ? It's even better than the original Hansa Studio SDX.
It makes no sense to say you’re not good at it. It’s like saying, “I’m not good at being a monk.” You are either living as a monk or you’re not.

That's subjective dude. I totally disagree.

By the way, this works perfectly but not really my cup of tea.

Thank you.

Apart from the post-metal ezx this is my most desired toontrack product and I never would have thought to see this here so quickly.

What are all these additional content zip files doing? It's not the update of the library and without the sound content

I do indeed understand where the sound comes from. Thank you very much.

Comparing this SDX to the "referenced" tracks from albums that Hugh, has done, it falls short of the authentic sounds in those recordings. Even translated through 320kps MP3.

Not the first miss for Toontrack.

Notice you're the only one whining about this release.... you should create a library....

Also, that's where your disappointment stems from.... you're comparing it to reference tracks in which it wasn't even created around lol. Like what LALALA has said : "It's more like a bunch of results of Hugh's experiments over his career."

Yep, because they're production ready, not mix or release ready. Processing at this stage is nothing more but sound design. I may be saying obvious things, but it took me many years to truly realize the difference
