There are Lo-Fi drums in .wav form, too; why not the Apple equivilent, .aif?
The high quality audio for low quality sounds is to allow room for processing... which isn't the most accurate way to describe it, but I'm sure someone will come along and properly explain it.

.aif is not a lossy format. You probably confused it with .mp3 files. Only known compressed variant of AIFF is as AIFC.

WAV and AIFF are essentially the same PCM-container style build, that was my point; WAV being Microsoft, AIFF being the Apple equivalent, two company's versions of essentially the same format.
