There's a good reason why the DX7 dominated music during the 1980's. It had the widest range of timbres & its control sources could control the entire timbral range. No longer were we stuck passing a stagnant waveform through a filter to modify timbre.
It was famous for covering the sounds that gigging keyboard players needed- bright tine electric pianos, crispy acoustic & electric slap basses, cut-through melodic percussion, jazz guitars, punchy brass, B3 organs, drums & percussion, solo woodwinds, plucked instruments (like harp & koto), pads & even sound FX.
