REQ: Field and Foley Physical Modeling
Physical modeling synthesis, the process of using math to replicate a real world sound using synthesis, has an uncanny quality about it; so familiar yet hyperreal. Often used to replicate the sound of real world instruments, physical modeling can simulate not only how an acoustic instrument sounds, but how it is played as well.
Using various physical modeling softwares, producer Galen Tipton attempted to highlight the hyperreality of physical modeling synthesis and push the parameters to the max, creating sounds that were tangible yet near impossible to replicate in reality. Galen also ran field recordings of nature and household sounds through resonant bodies and materials (simulating bowls, tubes, and plates) to turn the ordinary everyday sounds into the extraordinary. The result is a collection of sound specimens that are both very comprehensible, versatile, yet uniquely not of our world.
Releasing music under both her given name and “recovery girl” Ohio native Galen Tipton has been recognized by the likes of Iggy Pop, David Byrne, Adult Swim, and Anthony Fantano. She has released numerous projects on Orange Milk Records, Deskpop, and Unseelie collaborating with countless artists across all types of internet genres including the experimental music giants like Giant Claw (of Deaths Dynamic Shroud fame), Holly Waxwing, Seth Graham and Nmesh, to underground pop icons like Lil Mariko, GFOTY, Putochinomaricon, and Moodkiler. She has her own label "Community Garden" focused on community building, sharing and accessibility. Recently she has gone viral on Tik Tok for her "brain scratch" music, a stimulating blend of ASMR, IDM and ambient. In all her work whether it be pop, club or sound collage her focus is finding the connective tissue between the challenging and the accessible, always with a strong sense of play.
