referring to the video. why is it a mastering engineer test a CL1B emulation with full track ? I understand that he works with full track and want to see if the plugin could fit his workflow but.. I never seen any proper mastering engineer test an LA2A to see if it works for them. Most of those ME already know it wont make a sense, even before trying.

I dont think so. cl1b is only an optical mono compressor and is not a compressor developed exclusively for vocals. It was preferred by people for vocal use, but it was not intended for any specific use. In digital we can use it in stereo.

At the end of the day, a compressor is a compressor. Are there many different types, styles, methods, flavors etc. of compression? Absolutely. But an experienced musician/producer/engineer can do a LOT more with 3 random compressors across all stages of the mix, than an amateur can with every compressor in the world at his disposal.

Using a bus or mastering compressor on a single track? Using a CL1B across an entire mix? If it sound good, then sure. Why not.

Using the stereo or bus comp on the individual track is cool, can be overkill but it has close to no chance of harming the track but a compressor like LA2A or CL1B that's in its nature has unusual high freq sensitivity on stereo bus is just questionable, one could say a brighter track can be tamed with it, logically it sounds like it will, the thing is it wont, it will only pump like crazy even at -1db because of the nature of how it operates. set it to medium release to reduce the pumping, it will start distorting. It just wont work. A slight chance with plugin on linked mode, the chance with hardware is close to 0% with them being a mono and good luck doing it with two unlinked, different unit.

95% of the time, a track pumping like that wont even be in the "sounds good" category, idk maybe it will in a rare case, which I've never encounter all these years, not even once.

(referring to the video) The Kiive version he showing somehow doesnt have that high frequency sensitivity for some reason which is strange for CL1B emulation and he ended up saying he preferring that against something that everybody knows will fail at it be it the plugin or its hardware counter part. He's a known gear snob in every universe. He knows what he is doing and it's a paid promo. Few people in the comment section pointed it out and he get mad at it and ask them to make their own video. Is this type of behavior is okay for advertisement purpose ?

He get early access, it's a paid promo or he get a USD100+ plugin for free (unlikely but there's a possibility) which still count as some sort of payment.

There's no reason a CL1B or LA2A can't be used on a master bus dude, it depends on the song. It wont automatically distort on everything, it depends on the variables. If it sounds good it is good. If someone's compressing it that much to where it's distorting and pumping then there's probably something wrong with the mix, otherwise the engineer wouldn't feel the need to over-compress like that

At the end of the day all compressions are just different flavours. You can use any compressor on any task, there's no rules. Just depends what's needed

Ted Jensen @ Sterling Sound used CL1A's ( same except for construction) for years, Doug Sax from Mastering Lab also a famous ME used LA2a for mastering too, they're for sale currently. Sometimes an ME will use compressor just for its tone with no compression. I have used CL1A for mastering, using less than 1dB of compression, sounded great, this plugin sounds good like that too.

If it does appear you'll need to be quick. Kiive stuff seems to get DMCA'ed pretty soon after upload.
