The clavinet is an electric and mechanical instrument. It got pickups and is treated much like an electric guitar. But 60 strings strings, the resonance case, the pickups and everything else that makes up the sound characteristics of a Clavinet, distinguishes this from the guitar
Our four Clavinets have been modified and worked on for many years, and has their own individual personality. With different pickups, hammers and strings. We have (good…) reasons to believe that few others has gone to the length of taking these instruments apart, manipulated the mechanics, and developed methods for playing directly on the strings.
The library is a radical departure in sounds derived from the sounds of Hohner Clavinet, with timbres, variations and brilliance far surpassing that of other similar sampled instruments. It’s a deep and colourful free formed research into the clavinet timbres. drawing out its unique qualities through all kinds of treatments. And with some very different from the kinds of sounds usually associated with the clavinet. There is a lot more to this instrument than what is has established itself to be.
Four clavinets were taken apart and played directly on the strings. We plucked strings with fingers and pleckters, recording the sounds through an array og pedals and amps. We controlled feedback by placing an amp close to the instrument, created harmonics by barely damping strings with fingers and much more.
Sounds were made with 2 x Hohner Clavinet D6, 1 Hohner Clavinet E7, and 1 Hohner Pianet.
With alternative pickup systems, contact mics, original pickup systems and the newer humbucker pickups. Although we tend to prefer the original system.
Amps : The collection includes a small cigar-amp box, a custom Transistor NRK amp, a Vintage Roland Jazzchorus, Roland Bass-Cube, Fender BandMaster (1969), Fender Twin (1967), Mesa Simul Satellite, Marshall JCM 800, Sometimes two different amps beside each other for a wider stereo and fuller sound.
Analogue signal chains, lots of electronics, recorded in great acoustic environments and multiple high-end microphones.
The used mics were stereo pairs of : Pearl Elm-Cs , Coles 4038s , Sure SM57s, Neumann U87s, TLM103s, Neumann KL84s and Sennheiser MKH 800s
USER INTERFACE
The Kontakt user interface is intuitive and easy to play with. On the left side you have the usual suspects : level, attack and release, reverb, delay, lfo, pitch vibrato and lowpass filter. Mixer tracks on the right side, with purge buttons and routing opportunities. The FX button on the bottom row, opens a scripted effect bonanza that gives you countless ways of morphing your sounds and combining various, sometimes randomised, parameters with a XY pad.
SOUND SCULPTURING
The XY pad allows you to quickly create sonic texural variations . The XY is directed to almost everything in the plugin, including oscillators, filters, FX and Modulators. This FX department is turned off by default, but should you be in need of some creative inputs, just click the FX button, and a menu opens.The FXs XY-pad can be controlled by MIDI CC, aftertouch or pitchbend wheel (CC128 / CC129).
FURTHER SCULPTING
The FX menu opens a menu with different pre-tweaked FX settings controlled from XY pads. Choose from a variety of flexible modulation options such as an Pitch Follower (synth), multiple granular, sadistic filter, complex randomized serialconnected evolving textures and sound design elements.
TRACK MIXER
The mix controls allow you to blend together the different mixes and set the volume levels to your likings. There are up to 5 mixes to choose from, each one intended to provide a different sound and allow flexibility.
As the recording and editing process went along, we played around with different signal chains, so there are variations in this setup throughout the Library. We found it more important to get each patch as good as possible, rather than being locked to one particular setup nomatterwhat.
