The warm, distinctive sound of this home-made string experiment.

For this release, I’ve recorded it both ways – plucked with bare hands for a nice intimate sound – and played with a pick. As you will hear, that gives quite a different sound. The two articulations sound especially good together. There’s also a third FX layer which is the plucked sound but with some added chorus and reverb.

The raw analog waveforms of a Soviet-era children’s synthesizer.

These Pif synths were designed for children. They were produced from roughly 1989-1993 in a city called Ромны in the Ukraine. The factory that produced them, Роменский завод АТС, specialized in industrial telephone equipment, but also made several consumer products including this synthesizer.

The charming bell sounds of a Japanese children’s toy from the fifties.

The instrument was produced by Nomura (T. N.), a large manufacturer of tin-plated electronic toys. Although the item described itself as an “electric vibraphone,” it bears no resemblance to that instrument, and instead features an array of bells which are struck by a spindle.
