A Kontakt library using the BFD3 Factory content.
I have read about a lot of complaints from posters about BFD3 use of too much RAM. That they have to resort to recording each instrument separately because it was killing the DAW.

Personally, I like to use Kontakt, but I could never find an excellent library for drums. The Native instruments libraries sound constipated, the Vir2 one is buggy and others are not flexible enough. So I thought, maybe I can convert the BFD3 kits to be used in Kontakt. I am a developer in real life, so I created my own program to convert the WAV files used by BFD3 to be used in Kontakt. BFD3 uses multi channel wav files (Kit2 for example use 16 channels) in order to send sounds to different Mics. Kontakt on the other hand can only accept up to 2 channels (i.e. stereo files). So the program I created parsed the BFD3 files and converted them into separate WAV files. Now, in order to not overtax the machine, I opted to mix all Direct mics into one Mic (i.e. Kick in, Kick out, Snare Top, Snare Bottom and Direct Mics) for 2 reasons. One: Minimize the number of voices used when playing a note (so, for example, Kit 1 uses 14 channels (stereo for Overhead, stereo for Room, 5 mono channels for Amb and 5 for Direct). So basically if I wanted to convert the files as is, each time you play a note in Direct, it will use 12 voices. The second reason is memory and space. So instead of having 12 wave files, I have 4 files.

I have tried to make the interface similar to BFD3. Here are some screen shots:

Settings View

Mixer with EQ

Mixer with Reverb

For the EQ, I have also created a function to import all the EQ settings for all instruments types from the Factory presets and list them in the drop down list.

For the Reverb, I don't have my own IR samples, so I extracted the IRs used in NI Abbey Road 70s Drummer and used them here.

Note: EQ and Reverb are the only effects used by these instruments.

There is nothing out of this world in my script. It is just a simple one to provide you with control over the important settings. All instruments use the same script. There is no hardcoding of any kind. The group structure enables you to provide whatever info you need to display on the screen. The initial panning of the Direct Mic and key mapping is based on the XG Standard Kit map. All hits have been imported, but I have purged some hits that I don't personally use.

Also, all knobs (other than those of the EQ) can be automated. M and S buttons are also automated. Purging Mics of articulations are not automated.

Also, I wrote another function to import the BFD3 Grooves into Type 1 Midi files using the initial mapping of articulations. Right now, the converted midi files use one track per instrument, but it is very easy for me to create a new one to convert the Midi files to be a one track file.

After compressing the wav files to ncw, the total sample size for Kit 1 is 5.75GB. Even with the compressed format of BFD3, the space used by the Kontakt kit is less than that of BFD3.

This library is for personal use only. But I wanted to share it with anyone who would be interested.

hi! Thanks for this!
i am new to this, sorry for my stupid question, you can laugh if you want, but, once i've downloaded every part, ( 7 parts in total ) and decompressed them, how can I manage to open the samples from Kontakt ?
Where do I need to drag all these file to make them work in Kontakt ?
Thanks!!!!

First of all thanks for putting this together. It's awesome.

I do have a couple questions, both directly related to BFD3 and also about AudioZ structure as a whole. I apologize for being a bit noobish here but, hey, I'm trying to learn.

1: How do these kits fare in terms of usability? Are these single instruments requiring you to do a workaround to use them as a kit (i.e. loading up a Tom as one instance within Kontakt, then another to use a snare...etc.), or can you use them as a kit like the real BFD?

---
The last two questions are AudioZ-related and I couldn't really find direct answers to them in the FAQ but please excuse me if I missed something:

2: Does one need a certain amount of 'rep' before being able to post to the requests section? (I've been trying to request BFD3 for mac, just the standalone plugin sans the kits).

3: As far as utilizing paid-FFS services to download these larger AudioZ offerings...which service would you all recommend to get the best all around bang for my buck? What do you guys use?

Thanks all for any help you can supply...and sorry for the long post.

Please let me know how I can contribute to this community. I take so much and give so little as of right now!

A little pressed for time so I will answer the AudioZ questions and perhaps someone else can address the rest.

2) No. The reason you can't post a request is because you haven't read the Rules/FAQ section. There is specifically an item that says How To Post A Request and we even provide a sample which highlights the key areas you should look out for to make sure it's formatted properly. If you have any questions while you're with us, most times the answer can be found in the info section of our forums which can be seen in the left-hand navigation panel, once clicked it will expand to reveal submenus including the aforementioned rules/faq. Never ceases to amaze me how people just skip right by it but it's helpful for both you and us if you don't. Maybe we need to put something really interesting in there to get people to look.

The short answer is that you haven't chosen a category on the right, you need to select requests. Though you now know the answer I recommend you read the rest of the Info section anyway because it will answer many questions for you.

3) Uploaded.to or a multi-hoster which can download from mutliple accounts. We have topics on http://audiosex.pro about those. You should join there too, great community.

There are many ways to contribute from supplying software to putting up a changelog for a new version of a release to making a wallpaper and nicnt for a kontakt library to helping another member with a problem they're having. Also you can donate the coupon that you get when you sign up for an Uploaded account and I pass those off to people that contribute with one thing or other as a thanks. On AudioSex someone just donated a laptop to a poor musician. Those that truly want to give back will never find a shortage of opportunities and I would know because that's the reason I work here.

Hey thanks for the reply mate, apologies for missing the section in the FAQ going back to re read it now.

I see you're clearly a top contributor here and you've been a real help. I look forward to helping in any way I can. As of right now I own Serum, Cthulu, FxPansion Synth Squad, FM8, Sylenth, Chromaphone, Spire, and all the Valhalla Plugins on Mac.

...whats the easiest way to "plug in" to the community so that I can know when I can be of service?

No problem, glad I could help. I would say that the best way is to just hang out on both AudioZ and AudioSex which is easy because both sites are amazing and just partake in the community. You can also feel free to contact me if you want to donate a coupon, help with a project, etc. It may take me a little to respond because I'm always in the middle of like 10 projects and a mess of work but I will get back to you as soon as I can.

Oh and welcome to the forums.

Open HiHats get cut by themself (first hit is a hard played open HH, second hit a soft played open HH. Then you can hear how does the second hit cut the first hit)

To avoid this issue are following steps in Group Editor necessary:

1. All groups for open HiHats (Direct, Overhead, Room, Room Far) must be packed into only one Voice Group (Voice Group 1). Set the voice up to maximum (128).

2. All groups for closed HiHats (Direct etc.) must be packed into another Voice Group (Voice Group 2). Now the voice for closed HH should be the number of channel are activated in the mixer. So if you're using all channels resp. groups (Direct, Overhead, Room, Room Far) the correct voice is 4; thus one voice per group. Otherwise (voice: 1) the closed HH would impede each other.

3. Assign these groups to one Exclusive Group.

Now open HH will fade out and get cut by closed HH only.

Thanks again.

Wait, so the factory BFD3 library can be installed in .wav? I know the BFD2 expansions do this but I thought that feature was removed for version 3? I suppose there isn't a way to get this conversion program? :) I want the raw .wav's, these are all ncw's :(
