Dexed is a multi platform, multi format plugin synth that is closely modeled on the Yamaha DX7. Under the hood it uses music-synthesizer-for-android for the synth engine.

The goal of this project is to be a tool/companion for the original DX7. Sound engine with 'float' value parameters, different waveform à la TX81z would be great but anything that goes beyond the DX7 should and will be a fork of this project. This is to keep the compatibility with the original machine.

Dexed is licensed on the GPL v3.

Features:
• Multi platform (OS X, Windows or Linux) and multi format (VST, AU, LV2).
• The sound engine music-synthesizer-for-android is closely modeled on the original DX7 characteristics.
• 144 DAW automatable DX7 parameters available from one single panel.
• Fully supports DX7 input and output Sysex messages; including controller change. This means that you can use this with a native DX7/TX7 as a patch editor and SysEx manager.
• Each operator have a realtime VU meter to know which one is active.
• Can load/save any DX7/TX7 SysEx programs. It is also possible to save a single program into a different SysEx file.

Version 0.9.5:
• Added support for SCL/KBM microtuning.
• Added initial support for MPE performance.
• Upgraded build system to use JUCE 6.0 and build from locally acquired JUCE.
• A Collection of small UI changes, including higher contrast GUI assets, better sub-window management, and mouse wheel support.
• Added VST3 support.

the post title is incorrect - for pc, there's no x86 vst2, only x64 vst3 & standalone

i love the Dexed, and have used it in several projects. sadly, that example #1 patch "say again" isnt exactly the best demo sound

i can't believe after all this time they havent fixed say again hahaha.
there is also a preset pack called cart01, back in the day i had a lesson posted how to download and install the cart01. and both the Dexed and the pack have quite a story.
very useful tool if you like sound design. everything is available on kvr where it was born. thanks deuces

Cool, what is your opinion on how this compares to the paid offerings that try to emulate the same sound? I've heard a lot of recommendations for this synth in the past.

Simple: Dexed IS a DX7.
You can load original sysex from DX7 into it, and it sounds exactly like the original hardware.
Which means, very interesting, but not always top noise / sound relation.

Side note: If you like FM synthesis, you may try Aurora from Audio Nebula. It's quiet complete and very inspiring. A modern view on FM. (beside the eye killing GUI) .

I've actually compared a real DX7 and Dexed side by side and the sounds are as exact as could be. Not at all like hearing a real Minimoog vs an Arturia version, for example. Dexed and the DX7 are EXACTLY the same. The only thing you won't get out of it is the aging/worn out capacitor kind of sound (something like a little bit of hiss combined with a slightly lowered resolution kind of sound). Which most probably wouldn't prefer anyway. As mentioned, they'll even share sysex info.

That DX7 I compared it with, I loved it but sold it because why would I hang onto this gigantic synth when Dexed is the exact same thing? I've used Dexed a lot now, it's wonderful.

Big fan of the DX7 sound!

hey epic, Olymoon hit the nail on the head. its that this software reads the original sysex presets. i dont have a real DX7 to compare it to, but i found alot of great (and some not so great) sounds in the cart01. which is a collab collection of the original hardware's add ons.
