In this Track from Scratch course, house staple and South Records head-honcho George Smeddles builds a compelling composition from a blank Logic Pro project. In it, he dons his tutor hat and sets about sharing every step that goes into the conception of one of his productions. From sample selection and track arrangement to chopping vocals and building basslines, this course covers his production process in its entirety.

Having released his music on the likes of Defected, Ultra, Kookoo and more, George is well versed in constructing catchy, danceable house tunes that are as well suited to 4am at Fabric as they are at sunrise in Ibiza. And he would know, having added both of these settings to his list of past performances, along with CRSSD festival, Glastonbury and more. His music has made its way onto the USB sticks of some of house music’s best known artists, including Jamie Jones, Carl Cox, Michael Bibi and other house music royalty.

With nearly four and a half hours of high quality content, this course is truly a treasure trove of trips and tricks, designed to help you to produce radio-ready, club focussed tracks. Within the course, George strikes a balance between displaying his technical process and discussing his creative approach, highlighting how the two components compliment each other when it comes to writing great music.

In this course, George works within Apple’s Logic Pro software, and uses a great deal of the effects and utilities included with the software. In addition to Logic’s own devices, he occasionally looks to his extensive collection of third party plugins where necessary. Plugins by FabFilter, Waves and Korg make frequent appearances, as well as the Roland Cloud catalog of hardware emulation plugins. While George does reference tools and shortcuts that are only available in Logic Pro, the techniques themselves apply to any DAW.

This track from scratch course contains 19 chapters, spanning close to four and a half hours of content, in which time George manages to transform an empty Logic Pro session into a dance floor-primed house number. Whether you’re just stepping into a DAW for the first time, or just want to take your productions up a notch, there’s a lot to be learnt by following along with George as he shares his production process.
