Recently I was donated the source code to The Kiss of Shame, a magnetic tape emulation plug-in from 2014, originally developed by Eros Marcello and friends. The plug-in was never finished or released, but Eros has graciously allowed it to become open source. As part of my plug-in archeology project, I’ve been hacking away at the code to get it up and running again. In this blog post I’ll explain in detail how this plug-in works.

The Commodore Amiga revolutionized the home computer when it hit the shelves in 1985. Not only sporting colourful 16-bit graphics but also boasting four channels of 8-bit sampled audio. With sample sequencing software like ProTracker and OctaMED, it was the first computer that allowed its users to record and sequence instruments into a full song; inspiring musicians, programmers, graphic designers, and hackers to show what they could really do with the new technology that the Amiga gave them. And while its specs may seem like they pale in comparison to more modern computers, its sound and legacy continue to inspire people to this day.

My brother gave me a beautiful kalimba for Christmas. Of course, the first thing that came to my mind was to sample it. Said and done! I sampled the 10 tone kalimba with up to 6 velocity layers and stretched the samples to get over two octaves. In addition to the sampled kalimba, I came up with an arpeggiator engine to create inspirational and atmospheric patterns.

Hi, I made this instrument a couple of years ago. I wanted to try the entire process of sampling drum instrument. My old friend Michal Zubaty provided his own drum kit that he plays. I recorded his drum kit with his settings and tuning in a small room covered by a lot of carpets, blankets and acoustic panels to get tight, vintage, raw sound. I also used non-traditional mic settings – two mics in front of the drums. The first mic (Front MONO) is below and captures dense frequencies.
