In an attempt to reduce costs, in 1985 Oberheim released the Matrix 6 and Matrix 6R rack mount version. These were 6-voice analogue synths many of the same basic specs as their flagship Matrix 12 and Xpander. They were still based on the Oberheim "Matrix Modulation" system, however to keep costs down Oberheim used less expensive DCOs and other digital alternatives to expensive analogue components. Despite the compromises, the Matrix 6 and 6r still sounded good. Each of their 6 voices has a pair of DCOs, a low pass filter, 2 VCA's, 3 envelope generators, 2 LFO's, and 2 ramp generators which are perfect for creating of complex analog pads, basses, leads and effects.
